Mumbai, IndiaVazhipali Suresh Surekha improved upon her own national mark by vaulting a new height of 3.55m during the Standard Chartered Open National Athletic Championship at Priyadarshini Park Ground here on Sunday afternoon (12 Sep).
The venue of this year’s national championship - Priyadarshini Park - situated on the beaches of the Arabian Sea at Mumbai is rightly acclaimed as the most picturesque venue for athletic events in India.
Notwithstanding the gale from the sea which affected the athletes’ chances of performing well, a number of participants did their personal bests here in this three day meet. As a blessing when the women’s Pole Vault event was conducted, there was not much wind to affect the athletes and thus paved way for Surekha to set the new mark.
As usual women athletes showed lot of grit and courage by bettering a meet mark and equalled another.
Karnataka’s B.L. Bharathi improved the meet record in steeplechase clocking 11:07.13. Bharathi’s feat was a highly commendable one as she had won the grueling 6km national cross-country race at Gulbarga a day earlier on Friday. She travelled overnight to reach Mumbai in the early hours of Saturday and took the steeplechase title the same day.
Sahana Kumari, also hails from Karnataka State but represented the Indian Railways’ team here, sailed over 1.81m to equal Bobby Aloysius’ meet mark.
The men’s 100m winner Piyush Kumar and women's pole vaulter V.S. Surekha were adjudged as the "Best Athletes" of the meet.
Aided by their women athletes the Indian Railways team took the overall title while the Services team annexed the men’s team championship.
Union Minister for Sports and former Hindi film star Mr. Sunil Dutt gave away the prizes to the winners in the presence of Mr. Suresh Kalmadi, President of Athletic Federation of India and IAAF Council Member, in the meet which was excellently hosted by the Bombay City District Athletic Association under the stewardship of former national sprint champ Mr. Adille Sumariwala and others.
