Kenya&rsquo;s double Olympic champion Beatrice Chebet and Spain&rsquo;s Thierry Ndikumwenayo were the winners at the Cross Internacional de It&aacute;lica &ndash; a World Athletics Cross Country Tour Gold meeting &ndash; held on the outskirts of Seville on Sunday (17).
While two-time world cross-country champion Chebet was a dominant winner of the women&rsquo;s race, European 10,000m bronze medallist Ndikumwenayo prevailed in a much tighter finish over Burundi&rsquo;s Rodrigue Kwizera and pre-race favourite Ethiopia&rsquo;s Berihu Aregawi in the men&rsquo;s contest.
Chebet set a swift pace from the outset, and after just one minute of running she already had a lead over a chase quintet comprising Kazakhstan&rsquo;s Deisy Jepkemei, Uganda&rsquo;s Charity Cherop and Kenya&rsquo;s Mercy, Diana and Sharon Chepkemoi. European 5000m bronze medallist Marta Garc&iacute;a and fellow Spaniard Carolina Robles were a few metres back, alongside Sweden&rsquo;s Sarah Lahti.
Chebet covered the opening 2.5km loop in a brisk 7:36, six seconds faster than Jepkemei, herself another three clear of Cherop. The world 10,000m record-holder almost matched that pace on the second lap (7:44), by which time she had doubled her leading margin to 12 seconds.
Over the closing circuit, Chebet maintained her cadence and produced a 7:42 lap to seal the victory. By the time she crossed the finish line in 23:32, her lead had grown to 27 seconds over Jepkemei with Cherop holding off her pursuers to secure third place.
&ldquo;It was my third appearance here and I managed to triumph at last so I&rsquo;m very satisfied,&rdquo; said Chebet. &ldquo;It has also been very nice to share the weekend with my young compatriots Mercy, Diana and Sharon Chepkemoi.&rdquo;
Unlike the women&rsquo;s contest, the men&rsquo;s race opened at a moderate rhythm. Morocco&rsquo;s Younes Kniya was the surprise early leader, covering the opening lap in 7:13 while a large chase pack followed in 7:16.
European half marathon champion Crippa caught Kniya shortly after the fourth kilometre. At the bell &ndash; with the second lap having been covered in 7:03 &ndash; Crippa headed a group of eight men which included Olympic 10,000m silver medallist Berihu Aregawi. The 23-year-old Ethiopian took command for the first time about 18 minutes into the race but his lead proved to be short-lived as Kwizera and Ndikumwenayo moved to the front and began to push hard.
Crippa lost ground with about 700m left. Then, over the closing 500m, Ndikumwenayo&rsquo;s fierce attack paid off as he managed to build a slight advantage on Kwizera while Aregawi struggled and just couldn&rsquo;t follow their pace.
With the final lap covered in 6:36, Ndikumwenayo crossed the finish line ahead of his training mate Kwizera, though both were given the same time (21:24). Aregawi took third spot in 21:27 with Crippa another five seconds in arrears.
&ldquo;I didn&rsquo;t expect to win as my only target today was to help my club (Playas de Castell&oacute;n) to win the national team title but I felt strong throughout and decided to go for the victory over the last lap,&rdquo; said Ndikumwenayo, the winner here two years ago. &ldquo;I&rsquo;m now going to return to the altitude of Sierra Nevada where I&rsquo;m building up for the European Cross Country Championships which will be next competition.&rdquo;

Chebet and Ndikumwenayo victorious in Seville

Two-time world cross-country champion Jacob Kiplimo took 23 seconds off his own course record to win over 15km at the NN Zevenheuvelenloop in Nijmegen on Sunday (17).
His winning mark of 40:42 is the fastest time ever recorded in a standalone 15km race, though Kiplimo clocked a 40:27 split en route to his 57:31 half marathon performance, then a world record, in Lisbon in 2021.
Kiplimo, who won here in 41:05 last year, set out with intent. By the time the Ugandan reached 2km (5:26), he already had a clear lead over the rest of the field. That lead continued to grow as the race progressed, and Kiplimo reached 5km in 13:44.
The world and Olympic medallist went even faster for the next 5km, reaching 10km in 27:15 &ndash; 34 seconds up on his pace from last year and two minutes ahead of the chase pack.
Kiplimo maintained his relentless pace through the closing stages, crossing the line in 40:42. The men&rsquo;s race at the eight most recent editions of the Zevenheuvelenloop have now been won by Ugandan men.
Mike Foppen of the Netherlands emerged from the chase pack to take second place in 43:19, two seconds ahead of Britain&rsquo;s Marc Scott.
In the women&rsquo;s race, Ethiopia&rsquo;s Mizan Alem made a strong road-racing debut to take the title in 46:51.
The 2021 world U20 5000m champion held back slightly during the early stages, allowing Diane van Es of the Netherlands to carve out a nine-second lead by 2km. But Alem gradually made up ground and caught the Dutch runner at about 3.5km.
From there on, Alem could not be caught. She passed through 5km in 15:54 and 10km in 31:27 before going on to cross the finish line in 46:51, winning by exactly one minute from Van Es.
Only Letesenbet Gidey (44:20) and Tirunesh Dibaba (46:29) have ever recorded faster winning times at this race.

Kiplimo smashes course record at Zevenheuvelenloop in Nijmegen

Prodigious talent shone through at the Cinque Mulini with Kenya&rsquo;s Mathew Kipruto and Ethiopia&rsquo;s Yenenesh Shimket taking top honours at the World Athletics Cross Country Tour Gold meeting in San Vittore Olona on Sunday (17).
While Kipruto was among the pre-race favourites in the men&rsquo;s 10.2km race, Shimket was a surprise winner of the women&rsquo;s 6.2km title, upstaging home star Nadia Battocletti, the Olympic bronze medallist and double European champion.
Kipruto, the world U20 cross-country bronze medallist, positioned himself towards the front of a large lead pack on the first longer lap, which was covered in 6:13. By the end of the second lap, Kipruto had just Tanzania&rsquo;s John Wele and Kenya&rsquo;s world U20 5000m champion Andrew Kiptoo for company.
Not wanting to leave it all to the finish, Kipruto ramped up the pace on the third lap and opened up a seven-second gap on his compatriot Kiptoo. He was unable to maintain that tempo on the fourth lap, but he still managed to extend his lead slightly over Kiptoo. Wele, meanwhile, dropped back through the field while Eritrean teenager Saymon Amanuel moved into third.
Kiptoo made up some ground on the final lap, but Kipruto&rsquo;s lead was too great and he went on to cross the line in 27:26, winning by three seconds. Further back, Mathew Kipchumba came through for third place in 27:45, completing a Kenyan podium sweep.
Battocletti lead the field at the start of the women&rsquo;s race, covering the longer first lap in 6:56 with fellow Italian Ludovica Cavalli close behind. Shimket, Kenya&rsquo;s Sheila Jebet and Burundi&rsquo;s Elvanie Nimbona were also in the early lead group.
By the end of the second lap, though, Shimket had edged in front of Battlocletti with Jebet tucked in third, the trio having formed a small breakaway pack.
On the final lap, 17-year-old Shimket increased the pace with a 5:43 circuit and Battocletti had no response, eventually dropping down to third. Shimket, the African U20 cross-country silver medallist, won comfortably in 18:35 from Kenyan teenager Jebet (18:48) with Battocletti crossing the line in third (18:49).

<h2>Gressier and Nawowuna win again in Allonnes</h2>
Just 24 hours after losing his European 10km record to compatriot Etienne Daguinos, Jimmy Gressier kick-started his winter campaign with a victory at the Cross international Le Maine Libre-Allonnes-Sarthe &ndash; a World Athletics Cross Country Tour Gold meeting &ndash; on Sunday (17).
Kenya&rsquo;s Grace Loibach Nawowuna, meanwhile, successfully defended her title in the women&rsquo;s 7.61km race, winning by 23 seconds.
The men&rsquo;s 8.42km race was much closer and was only decided in the closing stages when Gressier kicked away from Ethiopian teenager Kuma Girma. Gressier, who earlier this year set French records for 5000m and 10,000m, won by one second in 23:20.
Girma was followed across the line by two of his fellow Ethiopian teenagers: Milkesa Fikadu (23:25) and Abrha Gebru (23:35).
By contrast, Nawowuna made a break much earlier in the women&rsquo;s race and opened up a significant gap on Uganda&rsquo;s Sarah Chelangat. The Kenyan eventually crossed the line unopposed in 22:55 with Chelangat taking second place in 23:18. France&rsquo;s Manon Trapp was a distant third in 23:46.
