Colombia&rsquo;s Ronal Longa and Puerto Rico&rsquo;s Jos&eacute; Figueroa led top sprinting performances at the first ever Pan American Championships, while Cuba&rsquo;s Daily Cooper achieved a middle-distance double with a world-class time in the 800m.
With Medell&iacute;n&rsquo;s 1500-metre altitude and 2027 Pan American Games wild cards up for grabs, Longa led the 100m qualifiers with 10.00 and stormed to a South American record of 9.85 (1.5m/s) in the final.&nbsp;
Immediately after crossing the finish line, he invited his coach Nelson Guti&eacute;rrez to join him in the celebration as he addressed the crowd.&nbsp;
Canada&rsquo;s Eliezer Adjibi, who broke the 10-second barrier for the first time (9.92), and Puerto Rico&rsquo;s Eloy Benitez (9.98) joined Longa on the podium.
Figueroa continued his winning streak in South America. Following his gold medal performances at the 2025 Pan American Junior Games in Paraguay and the 2026 Ibero American Championships in Peru, he joined the sub-20-second club and improved his own national 200m record to 19.87 (0.4m/s). He added two more medals with national records in the 4x100m and 4x400m.
Cooper surprised herself and the whole crowd with a mouthwatering 1:56.10 win in the 800m, a personal best by almost two seconds. She now sits sixth on this year&rsquo;s world top list. She struggled with altitude a day earlier but managed to also win the 1500m.
Mar&iacute;a Fernanda Murillo led the 53 Colombian athletes on home soil. A former high jumper who claimed 2018 world U20 bronze, Murillo transitioned to the combined events in 2023. She started the heptathlon with a bang in Medell&iacute;n, shedding 0.15 from the Colombian record in the 100m hurdles (12.74). After a 1.83m clearance in the high jump, she cruised to a PB score of 6367.
A month after breaking the Brazilian record in Peru (12.68), Vitoria Sena Batista Alves continued her progress in the 100m hurdles. She ran her second fastest time (12.59), only 0.02 shy of her PB set eight days earlier in France.
Yeral Nu&ntilde;ez and Gabriel Moronta led an extraordinary weekend for the Dominican Republic as the team prepares for the Central American and Caribbean Games on home soil later this summer. Coached by two-time Olympic champion F&eacute;lix S&aacute;nchez, Nu&ntilde;ez improved his two-year-old personal best to 48.20 to take 400m hurdles gold.
Moronta broke the 45-second barrier for the first time to clinch the 400m title in 44.67.
Other standout performances came in the women&rsquo;s 400m with Canadian champion Lauren Gale (50.68) narrowly edging out Puerto Rico&rsquo;s Gabby Scott (50.69) and Colombia&rsquo;s Lina Esther Licona Torres with a personal best of 50.75.
The top marks in the field came on the closing day through Chile&rsquo;s Claudio Romero in the discus (65.30m), Brazil&rsquo;s 2018 world indoor silver medallist Almir Cunha dos Santos in the triple jump (17.24m), USA&rsquo;s Austin Miller in the pole vault (5.81m) and Paraguay&rsquo;s Lars Flaming in the javelin (82.10m).
The Dominican Republic led the medal table with 12 medals after dominating four of the five relays, with eight gold, two silver and two bronze. Brazil followed with 16 medals (7-5-4) from Canada (5-5-3). Twenty countries won at least one medal. Close to 500 athletes from 28 nations competed over three days on the brand-new track at the Alfonso Galvis Stadium.
The second Pan American Championships will be held in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, on 1-4 June 2028.

Colombia’s Ronal Longa and Puerto Rico’s José Figueroa led top sprinting performances at the first ever Pan American Championships

Longa, Figueroa and Cooper shine at first Pan American Championships

Audrey Werro, Collen Kebinatshipi and Marileidy Paulino all broke Diamond League records at the Meeting de Paris on Sunday (28), as the Wanda Diamond League reached its midway point.
A heatwave across most of France had put the meeting in doubt, but thankfully the elite disciplines were able to go ahead. And once the competition got underway, the performances rose to match the conditions.
Werro continued her superb run of form to win a remarkable women&rsquo;s 800m in 1:53.80 &ndash; the third-fastest time in history.
The pacemaker led through the first lap in 55.35, with Werro just a few strides behind in about 55.8. The Swiss athlete took up the running at 500m, with two-time world 400m hurdles champion Femke Broeders-Bol and Ana&iuml;s Bourgoin battling for position behind her as Werro passed 600m in 1:25.27.
Bourgoin moved into second with 100 metres to go, but Broeders-Bol fought back down the home straight as Werro pulled clear to achieve a historic victory, becoming the first woman to break 1:54 on more than one occasion.
&ldquo;I wasn&rsquo;t expecting to be running so fast this season,&rdquo; said Werro, who also won in Stockholm earlier this month in 1:53.98. &ldquo;I feel that the biggest change in my life is the fact that I have become a professional athlete. I am no longer at school, and I must say it was tough to juggle both activities. Now, there is no excuse as I have all the time in the world to just focus on training, recovering, and the sport itself.&rdquo;
Broeders-Bol finished second in a PB of 1:55.60, moving to 24th on the world all-time list and just 0.06 shy of Ellen van Langen&rsquo;s Dutch record. Bourgoin was third in a French record of 1:55.65, while Prudence Sekgodiso was fourth in 1:56.83 and Renelle Lamote fifth in 1:56.93. Australia&rsquo;s Sarah Billings set an Oceanian record of 1:57.01 in sixth, with all of the top six setting PBs.
Just moments earlier, Kebinatshipi broke the men&rsquo;s 400m Diamond League record, clocking 43.54 to win a high-quality race.
Olympic silver medallist Matthew Hudson-Smith led into the home straight but Kebinatshipi timed his finish to perfection as the versatile sprinter from Botswana charged through the line.
The world champion&rsquo;s time was just 0.01 shy of the PB he set when winning his global title and took 0.06 off the previous Diamond League record set by Michael Norman in 2022. South Africa&rsquo;s Zakithi Nene finished second in 43.89, with USA&rsquo;s Chris Bailey third in 44.06. Hudson-Smith faded to fourth in a season&rsquo;s best of 44.09.
Paulino completed the trio of Diamond League records in the women&rsquo;s 400m. The Olympic champion moved up a gear with 150 metres to go and powered away to win in 48.48.
It was the third-fastest clocking of Paulino&rsquo;s career, behind only the times she ran at the 2024 Olympic Games and 2025 World Championships, and it took 0.09 off the Diamond League record set by Nickisha Pryce in 2024. World indoor champion Lurdes Gloria Manuel finished second in 49.37, with Stacey Ann Williams third in 49.51 and Lieke Klaver fourth in 49.97.
<h2>Meeting records broken and threatened</h2>
Mondo Duplantis also added a record-breaking performance to the evening, clearing 6.13m to break his own Meeting de Paris pole vault record from 2021.
The world record-holder needed just three jumps to secure victory, clearing each height on his first attempt. He was the only athlete to go clear at 6.03m, and then went 10 centimetres higher. He ended his series with three attempts at a would-be world record of 6.32m, but the Swede was more than happy to return to winning ways after his surprise recent defeat in Stockholm. France&rsquo;s Baptiste Thiery finished second with 5.93m.
Jamal Britt produced another standout performance in the men&rsquo;s 110m hurdles, coming from behind to win in 12.89 (0.8m/s), moving him to equal eighth on the world all-time list. Japan&rsquo;s Shunsuke Izumiya came through for second in 13.01, ahead of Trey Cunningham (13.07).
Marco Arop dominated the men&rsquo;s 800m. The 2023 world champion went through the first lap in about 50 seconds, then moved up a gear and opened a huge lead on the rest of the field. He faded only in the final 40 metres, but still won by almost two seconds in a world-leading 1:41.84, the third-fastest time of his career.
Niels Laros finished second in a PB of 1:43.60, with Tobias Gronstad third in 1:43.63.
Less than three weeks after turning 20, Cameron Myers impressed in the men&rsquo;s 1500m to break the Oceanian record with a world-leading 3:28.00.
The Australian began a long run for home at 1000m, then dropped Azeddine Habz with 200 metres to go before winning by almost two seconds. Habz finished second in 3:29.80, with 2022 world champion Jake Wightman third in a season&rsquo;s best of 3:29.95.
Tobi Amusan came through over the final three barriers to win the women&rsquo;s 100m hurdles in 12.28 (0.7m/s). Grace Stark was second in 12.38 and Alaysha Johnson third in 12.39. Nadine Visser led during the first half of the race but faded to fourth in 12.41, with the top five women all setting season&rsquo;s bests.
World indoor champion Georgia Hunter Bell once again showed impressive tactical awareness to win the women&rsquo;s 1500m in 3:55.63, just 0.07 shy of the world lead.
Jessica Hull followed the pacemaker through the first half, then held the lead after the pacemaker stepped aside with 600 metres remaining. Freweyni Hailu closed the gap, with Hunter Bell and Agathe Guillemot also breaking away from the rest of the field by the bell.
Hailu took the lead with 250 metres to go, but Hunter Bell responded and moved ahead with 150 metres remaining before going on to win. Hailu was second in 3:55.92, while Guillemot set a French record of 3:56.24 in third. Hull finished fourth in a season&rsquo;s best of 3:57.22.
<h2>Bromell takes 100m, Fisher wins 5000m</h2>
Trayvon Bromell won the men&rsquo;s 100m from lane eight, clocking a season&rsquo;s best of 9.91 (0.1m/s). Noah Lyles was second in 9.92, with 2021 Olympic champion Marcell Jacobs third in a season&rsquo;s best of 9.96.
The men&rsquo;s 5000m had originally been billed as an attempt on the European record by world 10,000m champion Jimmy Gressier, but the pack fell off the desired pace in the early laps and the focus shifted to the race for victory.
Final pacemaker Etienne Daguinos led through 3000m in 7:46.27, by which time the main pack was almost 30 metres behind, but a large group was still in contention at the bell. In the closing stages, USA&rsquo;s Grant Fisher emerged from the pack to win in 12:54.80 from Kenya&rsquo;s Jacob Krop (12:55.22) and Andreas Almgren (12:55.38). Burundi&rsquo;s Egide Ntakarutimana set a national record of 12:56.06 in fourth, while Gressier faded to seventh in 12:57.79.
In the men&rsquo;s 3000m steeplechase, four athletes were still in contention at the bell: African champion Gemechu Godana, Edmund Serem, Samuel Firewu and Karl Bebendorf. Bebendorf kicked with 200 metres to go and went on to win in a PB of 8:05.55, moving to second on the German all-time list behind Frederik Ruppert, who broke the European record earlier this year. Godana, contesting his first steeplechase outside Africa, held on for second in 8:05.86, a PB by nine seconds.
Angelica Moser won the women&rsquo;s pole vault with 4.77m. Eliza McCartney had led up to and including 4.70m with first-time clearances, but couldn&rsquo;t get over 4.77m. Olympic champion Nina Kennedy was third, also with 4.70m. Moser had one attempt at 4.90m but lost her grip and had an awkward fall, so opted not to take any further attempts.
In the women&rsquo;s javelin, Yan Ziyi threw 67.44m in the first round, a mark that proved enough to win by almost four metres. She had one other measured throw, 60.52m in the third round, then passed her final three attempts.
Sarah Mitton won a close women&rsquo;s shot put contest with 19.99m, finishing ahead of Olympic champion Yemisi Mabry, who threw 19.93m, and world leader Jessica Schilder, who reached 19.88m.

Werro, Kebinatshipi and Paulino break Diamond League records in Paris

Annik K&auml;lin broke the meeting record and her own world lead to win the heptathlon at the Stadtwerke Ratingen Mehrkampf-Meeting, while world champion Leo Neugebauer delighted the home crowd to win the decathlon at the World Athletics Combined Events Tour Gold meeting on Sunday (28).
K&auml;lin improved on her own Swiss record to win with 6819, having set three meeting records in individual disciplines within her winning series, while Neugebauer won the decathlon with 8573 after breaking meeting records in the shot put and discus.
K&auml;lin, the recent G&ouml;tzis winner with 6726, had already been on course for another major score after a superb first day. The fourth-place finisher at the 2024 Olympic Games opened her campaign with 12.60 in the 100m hurdles, breaking the meeting record with the third-fastest hurdles performance ever recorded within a heptathlon and a time just 0.06 shy of Jessica Ennis-Hill&rsquo;s world heptathlon best.
She followed it with 1.75m in the high jump and 14.00m in the shot put, then ended the day as she had started it: with another meeting record. Her PB of 23.00 in the 200m gave her a running tally of 3974, 115 points better than her opening-day score in G&ouml;tzis.
K&auml;lin started day two in the same way she had bookended day one, producing another meeting record. Her 6.75m (-1.1m/s) in the long jump equalled a mark that had stood for 20 years and was almost half a metre farther than anyone else managed in the discipline.
She was second overall in the javelin with a season&rsquo;s best of 47.85m, keeping her on track to improve her own world-leading mark, then rounded out the weekend with 2:11.93 in the 800m, again the second-best performance of the day in that discipline.
It gave K&auml;lin a winning score of 6819, breaking Sabine Braun&rsquo;s meeting record of 6787 that had stood since 1997. It also moves her to 20th on the world all-time list.
USA&rsquo;s Erin Marsh maintained her second-place position throughout the second day and ended the weekend with a PB of 6305. In the battle of the German heptathletes, Sandrina Sprengel came out on top, finishing third overall with 6218, ahead of Anna-Elisabeth Ehlers with 6193 and Emma Kaul with 6152.
Three-time Olympic champion Nafi Thiam tested her form in the high jump, clearing 1.84m, and shot put, throwing 14.64m.
<h2>Neugebauer holds off Gletty</h2>
Neugebauer took the lead in the second discipline and maintained it to the end. The German opened with 10.81 in the 100m, then leapt 7.67m to win the long jump. He followed it with a meeting record of 16.95m in the shot put, before clearing 1.97m in the high jump and clocking 47.85 in the 400m.
In that final discipline on the first day, USA&rsquo;s Harrison Williams was initially disqualified before being reinstated. His 46.74 was a meeting record and kept him in contention for a podium finish.
Neugebauer&rsquo;s day-one tally of 4482 was 150 points down on the score he achieved at the same stage in G&ouml;tzis, where he went on to finish second with 8730. France&rsquo;s Makenson Gletty, a non-finisher in G&ouml;tzis, sat second overnight with 4380.
Neugebauer started the second day with 14.69 in the 110m hurdles. Gletty made some inroads into the German&rsquo;s lead with a PB of 13.84, just 0.03 behind Devon Williams, who was fastest of the day.
But Neugebauer responded in the discus, extending his advantage with a meeting record of 53.32m, almost 11 metres farther than Gletty. He then equalled his season&rsquo;s best of 5.00m in the pole vault and threw 57.03m in the javelin to head into the 1500m with a comfortable lead.
He needed that buffer, as Gletty is one of the strongest 1500m runners in the combined events world. The Frenchman duly lived up to that reputation, clocking 4:26.76. Neugebauer finished further down the field in 4:43.02, but it was enough to secure the victory.
Neugebauer finished with 8573 &ndash; the best score in Ratingen for 10 years &ndash; while Gletty held on to second place with 8458. Devon Williams was third with a PB of 8402, just ahead of US compatriot Harrison Williams, who scored 8345.
Norway&rsquo;s 2025 world leader Sander Skotheim was a non-finisher. He ran 10.94 in the 100m, jumped 7.32m in the long jump, threw 14.07m in the shot put and cleared 1.91m in the high jump before retiring from the competition. Skotheim felt discomfort in his left calf after the long jump and, having had surgery in January on a ligament at the bottom of his left foot, opted not to risk aggravating the injury.
