Adrianna Sułek-Schubert will target her fourth heptathlon win at the Wiesław Czapiewski Memorial when she returns to the World Athletics Combined Events Tour Gold event in the Polish town of Nakło nad Notecią this weekend (11-12).
She goes up against Austria’s 2019 world bronze medallist Verena Mayr, while the decathlon features Czechia’s world indoor fourth-place finisher Vilém Stráský.
Sułek-Schubert defends her heptathlon title. The 2022 European silver medallist was coached by the late Wiesław Czapiewski, in whose honour the meeting is held. She set a meeting record of 6290 at the inaugural edition in 2022, then scored 6007 to win in 2024 and went close to her meeting record with 6287 to retain her title last year.
The 27-year-old started her first heptathlon of the year in Warsaw at the end of last month but withdrew after clocking 13.85 in the hurdles due to illness. She finished fourth at her home World Indoor Championships in Toruń in March, four years on from her pentathlon silver in Belgrade, her performances in Toruń including a shot put PB of 14.89m.
Mayr was third in Nakło nad Notecią with 6159 last year and also returns. The 31-year-old opened her outdoor season by contesting the shot put and high jump in Grenoble in May and lines up for her first heptathlon of the year.
She is joined by her compatriot Sarah Lagger, who won at the Austrian Combined Events Championships last month with a score of 5950, as well as Sweden’s Bianca Salming and Erika Wärff, who set a PB of 6271 at the Götzis Hypomeeting in May.
Adéla Tkáčová is also in PB form – she scored 6227 to win at the Czech Combined Events Championships last month.
In the decathlon, Stráský returns looking to go one better than his runner-up finish in a PB of 8136 last year. The 2023 World University Games champion is back in combined events action for the first time since finishing fourth at the World Indoor Championships with a heptathlon PB of 6188. That followed his fifth-place finish at the World Indoor Championships in 2025 and sixth place the year before that.
He sits second on the entry list to French 22-year-old Maxime Moitie-Charnois who set a PB of 8156 to finish second at the French Championships in Talence last year. He scored 7975 in Götzis in May.
Lithuania’s Edgaras Benkunskas finished second to Stráský at the World University Games three years ago and faces him again, contesting his first decathlon of the year.
Puerto Rico’s Yariel Soto set a PB of 8032 when finishing second in Arona last year, while Czechia’s Adam Havlíček was just five points off that mark with the PB of 8027 he achieved in Brno, also last month.

Sułek-Schubert to defend Czapiewski Memorial title

Annik Kälin broke the meeting record and her own world lead to win the heptathlon at the Stadtwerke Ratingen Mehrkampf-Meeting, while world champion Leo Neugebauer delighted the home crowd to win the decathlon at the World Athletics Combined Events Tour Gold meeting on Sunday (28).
Kälin improved on her own Swiss record to win with 6819, having set three meeting records in individual disciplines within her winning series, while Neugebauer won the decathlon with 8573 after breaking meeting records in the shot put and discus.
Kälin, the recent Götzis winner with 6726, had already been on course for another major score after a superb first day. The fourth-place finisher at the 2024 Olympic Games opened her campaign with 12.60 in the 100m hurdles, breaking the meeting record with the third-fastest hurdles performance ever recorded within a heptathlon and a time just 0.06 shy of Jessica Ennis-Hill’s world heptathlon best.
She followed it with 1.75m in the high jump and 14.00m in the shot put, then ended the day as she had started it: with another meeting record. Her PB of 23.00 in the 200m gave her a running tally of 3974, 115 points better than her opening-day score in Götzis.
Kälin started day two in the same way she had bookended day one, producing another meeting record. Her 6.75m (-1.1m/s) in the long jump equalled a mark that had stood for 20 years and was almost half a metre farther than anyone else managed in the discipline.
She was second overall in the javelin with a season’s best of 47.85m, keeping her on track to improve her own world-leading mark, then rounded out the weekend with 2:11.93 in the 800m, again the second-best performance of the day in that discipline.
It gave Kälin a winning score of 6819, breaking Sabine Braun’s meeting record of 6787 that had stood since 1997. It also moves her to 20th on the world all-time list.
USA’s Erin Marsh maintained her second-place position throughout the second day and ended the weekend with a PB of 6305. In the battle of the German heptathletes, Sandrina Sprengel came out on top, finishing third overall with 6218, ahead of Anna-Elisabeth Ehlers with 6193 and Emma Kaul with 6152.
Three-time Olympic champion Nafi Thiam tested her form in the high jump, clearing 1.84m, and shot put, throwing 14.64m.

Neugebauer holds off Gletty

Neugebauer took the lead in the second discipline and maintained it to the end. The German opened with 10.81 in the 100m, then leapt 7.67m to win the long jump. He followed it with a meeting record of 16.95m in the shot put, before clearing 1.97m in the high jump and clocking 47.85 in the 400m.
In that final discipline on the first day, USA’s Harrison Williams was initially disqualified before being reinstated. His 46.74 was a meeting record and kept him in contention for a podium finish.
Neugebauer’s day-one tally of 4482 was 150 points down on the score he achieved at the same stage in Götzis, where he went on to finish second with 8730. France’s Makenson Gletty, a non-finisher in Götzis, sat second overnight with 4380.
Neugebauer started the second day with 14.69 in the 110m hurdles. Gletty made some inroads into the German’s lead with a PB of 13.84, just 0.03 behind Devon Williams, who was fastest of the day.
But Neugebauer responded in the discus, extending his advantage with a meeting record of 53.32m, almost 11 metres farther than Gletty. He then equalled his season’s best of 5.00m in the pole vault and threw 57.03m in the javelin to head into the 1500m with a comfortable lead.
He needed that buffer, as Gletty is one of the strongest 1500m runners in the combined events world. The Frenchman duly lived up to that reputation, clocking 4:26.76. Neugebauer finished further down the field in 4:43.02, but it was enough to secure the victory.
Neugebauer finished with 8573 – the best score in Ratingen for 10 years – while Gletty held on to second place with 8458. Devon Williams was third with a PB of 8402, just ahead of US compatriot Harrison Williams, who scored 8345.
Norway’s 2025 world leader Sander Skotheim was a non-finisher. He ran 10.94 in the 100m, jumped 7.32m in the long jump, threw 14.07m in the shot put and cleared 1.91m in the high jump before retiring from the competition. Skotheim felt discomfort in his left calf after the long jump and, having had surgery in January on a ligament at the bottom of his left foot, opted not to risk aggravating the injury.

Annik Kälin broke the meeting record and her own world lead to win the heptathlon at the Stadtwerke Ratingen Mehrkampf-Meeting, while world champion Leo Neugebauer delighted the home crowd to win the decathlon

Kälin and Neugebauer victorious in Ratingen as meeting records fall

World champion Leo Neugebauer, recent Götzis Hypomeeting winner Annik Kälin, world indoor gold medallist Sander Skotheim and three-time Olympic champion Nafissatou Thiam will be among the stars in action when the World Athletics Combined Events Tour Gold returns to Ratingen on Saturday and Sunday (27-28 June).
With one of the strongest fields in the event’s history, the Stadtwerke Ratingen Mehrkampf-Meeting offers top-class clashes and a chance for athletes to test their form as they work towards events such as the European Championships in Birmingham in August.
Neugebauer and Skotheim lead the decathlon field, while Kälin heads the heptathlon line-up and Thiam contests select individual events across the weekend.
German record-holder Neugebauer makes his Ratingen debut as the world champion and Olympic silver medallist. It will be his second decathlon within a month following his runner-up finish to Simon Ehammer at the Hypomeeting in Götzis where he scored 8730 – the fifth-best score of his career so far.
His national record of 8961 from 2024 places him sixth on the world all-time list and he scored 8804 to win his world title in Tokyo last year. In Götzis he went close to his PBs in the long jump (7.97m) and high jump (2.06m) and the 26-year-old will want to build on that in Ratingen.
Skotheim, who sits one place below Neugebauer on the all-time list with the Norwegian record of 8909 he set to win in Götzis last year, makes his return after injury.
“After recovering from my injury, I’m fired up to compete again,” the 2025 world indoor heptathlon champion told organisers. “My team and I have trained hard – now it’s time to put what we’ve learned to the test and see what we still need to work on before the European Championships.”
The competition in Ratingen will be his first since the World Championships in Tokyo, where disqualification in the 110m hurdles ended his medal hopes. Earlier in the year he set a European heptathlon record to win the continental title and he then clinched the world indoor crown.
Makenson Gletty of France got European decathlon bronze in 2024, finishing one place behind Skotheim, and they clash again in Ratingen along with Estonia’s Rasmus Roosleht and USA’s Harrison Williams, both also back in action after competing in Götzis. Williams, the Olympic seventh-place finisher, scored 8325 in Götzis, his performances including a PB-equalling 100m of 10.54.
Among those looking to challenge themselves in a strong international field on home soil are Germany’s Moritz Bartko and Leon-Joel Clair, who both finished in the top eight at last year’s European U20 Championships, and two-time national champion Marcel Meyer.
Kälin is back in heptathlon action less than a month on from her world-leading Swiss record in Götzis.
Then contesting her first heptathlon since Götzis the year before, the Olympic fourth-place finisher scored 6726 to win a close contest after a strong second day that included a 200m PB of 23.33. The 26-year-old, who claimed world indoor silver in the individual long jump in 2025, also leapt a wind-aided 6.96m (2.2m/s) in Götzis.
She will go up against Germany’s Sandrina Sprengel and Vanessa Grimm, who will want to impress on home soil.
Sprengel defends her title after winning the 2024 contest. She went on to finish fifth at the World Championships in Tokyo with a PB of 6434 and then competed at the World Indoor Championships in Poland. More recently the 22-year-old finished eighth in that Götzis contest won by Kälin with the second-best score of her career so far – 6328.
Grimm, who finished fourth in last year’s world indoor pentathlon, was two places ahead of Sprengel in Götzis with a PB of 6381, her campaign including individual PBs in the 100m hurdles and 800m.
Three other German athletes in Ratingen – Anna-Elisabeth Ehlers, Marie Dehning and Emma Kaul – have also already surpassed 6000 points this season. They will be joined by national pentathlon champion Serina Riedel, the 2022 world U20 silver medallist who claimed European U23 bronze last year, as she opens her season.
The field also features Poland’s Paulina Ligarska and USA’s Lexie Keller.
Belgium’s Thiam competes for the first time since last year’s World Championships. As well as being a three-time Olympic champion, the 31-year-old has won two world heptathlon titles and her PB of 7013 places her fourth on the world all-time list.
As she did in Ratingen in 2023, Thiam will contest select events.
“I’m really looking forward to competing in Ratingen again,” she told organisers. “The meeting has such a great atmosphere, and I had a lot of fun competing there in 2023. It will be nice to start my season among other heptathletes and to participate in a number of disciplines over the weekend.”

The World Athletics Combined Events Tour Gold returns to Ratingen on Saturday and Sunday (27-28 June)

Neugebauer, Kälin, Skotheim and Thiam ready for Ratingen

Simon Ehammer and Annik Kälin became the first-ever Swiss winners of the Hypomeeting in Götzis, setting world leads and national records during the World Athletics Combined Events Tour Gold meeting on Saturday and Sunday (30-31 May).
Ehammer scored 8778 to win the decathlon ahead of Leo Neugebauer, while Kälin clinched the heptathlon crown with 6726, just 21 points ahead of Emma Oosterwegel.
Saturday saw Ehammer produce the best first-day score in decathlon history – 4762 – after a superb series that included a world decathlon best and Swiss record of 8.51m in the long jump.
The world indoor champion started strongly, clocking 10.41 in the 100m – the second-fastest time of his career and bettered in the field only by Canada’s Damian Warner, who ran 10.28.
Ehammer then moved on to one of his specialist events, the long jump. After fouling his opening attempt, he sailed out to 8.51m (1.0m/s) with his second-round effort. The mark added six centimetres to his own world decathlon best and Swiss record, which he set in Götzis in 2022.
Germany’s world champion Neugebauer also made a strong start, helped by a 7.97m leap in the long jump, just three centimetres shy of his lifetime best, while eight-time Götzis winner Warner jumped 7.73m.
Neugebauer made up ground in the shot put, throwing 16.71m, and Ehammer kept his momentum going with a season’s best of 15.15m, just 16 centimetres shy of his PB and one centimetre farther than Warner’s 15.14m.
Both Ehammer and Neugebauer then came close to their lifetime bests in the high jump, clearing 2.03m and 2.06m respectively. Warner remained in contention with 2.00m, the same height cleared by Germany’s Niklas Kaul, while USA’s Hakim McMorris was the only athlete in the field to set a PB, clearing 2.03m to move into fourth place.
Neugebauer’s high jump brought him to within 100 points of Ehammer, but the Swiss athlete responded in the 400m, clocking 47.33 – again close to his lifetime best. US duo Harrison Williams and McMorris were the only athletes to run faster, recording 46.82 and 47.09 respectively, while Warner ran 47.77 and Neugebauer 47.99.
That meant Ehammer ended the day on 4762, improving on the previous best day-one score in history of 4747 set by Dan O’Brien during the 1991 US Championships. Neugebauer sat second with 4632, while Warner was third with 4541.
Ehammer started day two by clocking 13.48 – a tenth of a second off his PB – to top the performances in the 110m hurdles. But there was disappointment for McMorris who fell in that same heat and did not finish.
The Swiss leader threw 41.09m in a discus contest topped by Neugebauer’s 50.77m and then shared the lead in the pole vault with Amadeus Gräber as they both cleared 5.20m. Neugebauer cleared 5.00m, while Kaul managed 4.90m.
Kaul launched a meeting decathlon best of 78.21m in the javelin, as Neugebauer threw 58.46m and Ehammer managed 54.38m. But Ehammer closed with 4:43.22 in the 1500m and that was more than enough to secure top spot and improve his own Swiss record from 8575 – set when finishing third in Götzis last year – to 8778.
Neugebauer finished second on 8730, while Kaul was third (8528) and Warner fourth (8497).

Kälin wins close heptathlon contest

A strong second day for Olympic fourth-place finisher Annik Kälin saw her win in her first heptatlon since Götzis last year, when she placed fifth.
It was world indoor champion Sofie Dokter who led the closely contested contest at the end of the first day as she set three significant PBs. But the next four women were separated by just 12 points, with Kälin in second ahead of USA’s world bronze medallist Taliyah Brooks, Germany’s Vanessa Grimm and the Netherlands’ Emma Oosterwegel.
Brooks made the strongest start, winning the 100m hurdles in 12.87, finishing 0.04 ahead of Kälin. Dokter also made an early statement, reducing her PB to 13.27.
Dokter followed that with a 1.80m clearance in the high jump, while Brooks cleared 1.77m and Kälin managed 1.74m.
The Dutch all-rounder then set another big PB in the shot put, throwing 14.70m to improve her previous best by 47 centimetres. Brooks produced a season’s best of 14.17m and Kälin threw 13.67m.
Dokter completed her day with a third PB, clocking 23.13 in the 200m, improving on her previous best of 23.46. There were also PBs for Germany’s Sophie Weissenberg, who ran 23.25, Kälin with 23.33 and Oosterwegel with 23.65.
Brooks clocked 24.23 but did not return for the long jump, javelin and 800m on the second day.
On what proved to be a superb weekend for Swiss athletes in the long jump, Kälin – who won world indoor long jump silver last year – soared into the lead at the start of day two, leaping a wind-assisted 6.96m (2.2m/s) after a wind-legal 6.81m (1.1m/s) in the first round. That put her 52 points ahead of Dokter, who jumped 6.47m (0.2m/s).
Oosterwegel launched herself into second place between Kälin and Dokter by throwing 52.50m in the javelin – a performance only bettered by Germany’s Marie Dehning with a PB of 56.33m. Kälin retained top spot with 45.25m, while Dokter had a best of 44.00m to sit in third place with just one event remaining.
While Oosterwegel finished strongly with 2:09.19 to top the 800m, it wasn’t enough to beat Kälin who clocked 2:11.72 to take her winning tally to 6726 – just 25 points ahead of Oosterwegel.
There were PBs or national records for the top six, Oosterwegel securing her best ever finish in Götzis with 6705 and Dokter securing third with 6627, followed by Weissenberg (6449), Sveva Gerevini with an Italian record of 6413 and Grimm (6381).

Simon Ehammer and Annik Kälin become first-ever Swiss winners of the Hypomeeting in Götzis

Ehammer and Kälin set world-leading Swiss records to win in Götzis

Five global title winners will clash in the men’s decathlon at the Hypo Meeting in Götzis this weekend, as one of the strongest fields of the year gathers for the World Athletics Combined Events Tour Gold meeting on Saturday and Sunday (30-31 May).
Leo Neugebauer heads the entries for what will be his first decathlon since winning the world title with 8804 last year. The Olympic silver medallist, world No.1 and German record-holder with 8961, already has several competitions behind him in 2026, including a 53.00m discus throw, 16.92m shot put and 14.57 clocking in the 110m hurdles.
Neugebauer made his Götzis debut last year, finishing fifth with 8555. He returns looking to improve on that and secure a first podium finish at the famed Austrian meeting.
World indoor champion Simon Ehammer heads to Götzis off the back of an incredible start to the 2026, having won the world indoor title with a world heptathlon record of 6670. He opened his outdoor combined events season with victory at the Multistars meeting in Brescia last month with 8361. This weekend he’ll be keen to improve on the Swiss decathlon record of 8575 he set when finishing third in Götzis last year.
Canada’s Damian Warner needs little introduction in Götzis. The 2021 Olympic champion has won the meeting eight times and is one of the few men in history to have surpassed 9000 points. Now 36, Warner scored 8527 in Götzis last year – higher than two of his previous winning scores at the meeting, but only enough for sixth in a remarkable competition. He has already shown sharp early-season form this year, running 13.76 for the 110m hurdles and 10.44 for 100m.
His compatriot Pierce LePage, the 2023 world champion, continues his return to form. He won the Canadian indoor heptathlon title earlier this year with 5683, but Götzis will be his first outdoor competition of 2026. LePage did not finish in Götzis last year or at the World Championships, meaning the last decathlon he completed remains his 8909-point triumph at the 2023 World Championships.
Germany’s Niklas Kaul, the 2019 world champion, also returns to Götzis after one of the best performances of his career there last year. His 8575 tally for equal third last year was his best score outside of a major championships, bettered only by the 8691 PB he set to win the 2019 world title. He went on to finish fourth at last year’s World Championships with 8538.
A trio of US athletes – all winners of national titles in recent years – will also be looking to build on their first Götzis appearances from last year, which brought mixed fortunes.
Heath Baldwin, the world indoor silver medallist, finished sixth at last year’s World Championships and was US champion in 2024. The 8625 performer placed eighth in Götzis last year with 8430.
Harrison Williams, the 2023 US champion, has a PB of 8630 and has finished seventh at each of the past three global outdoor championships. He did not finish in Götzis last year on his Hypo Meeting debut.
Hakim McMorris, the 2026 US indoor champion, arrives in Götzis after setting a PB of 8420 to win at the Mt SAC Relays. Like Williams, he did not finish on his Götzis debut last year.
The field also includes Estonia’s Karel Tilga, who set his PB of 8681 to finish fourth at the 2023 World Championships; France’s Makenson Gletty, who set a PB of 8606 to take European bronze in 2024; and Sven Roosen, who set a Dutch record of 8607 when finishing fourth at the 2024 Olympic Games.
A new heptathlon champion will be crowned in Götzis with a field led by three women who, between them, have won the past four world indoor titles.
Dutch all-rounder Sofie Dokter, the world indoor champion, returns to the meeting where she set her PB of 6576 when finishing second last year. She went on to finish sixth at the World Championships in Tokyo, matching her position from the 2024 Olympic Games. She has already contested several low-key competitions this year, including a shot put PB of 14.23m.
Finland’s Saga Vanninen, the 2025 world indoor champion, is set for her first outdoor combined events competition since finishing seventh at last year’s World Championships with 6396. The two-time world U20 champion set her PB of 6563 at the 2025 European U23 Championships and was fourth in Götzis in 2023.
Belgium’s Noor Vidts owns the highest PB in the field, having scored 6707 to take Olympic bronze in 2024. The two-time world indoor champion missed most of last year through injury, so Götzis will be her first heptathlon since the 2024 Olympic Games.
Emma Oosterwegel of the Netherlands also set her PB to win Olympic bronze, scoring 6590 in Tokyo in 2021. She finished ninth at last year’s World Championships with 6381 and has competed in Götzis several times, her best result being fourth in 2024.
USA’s Taliyah Brooks set a PB of 6581 to finish equal third at the World Championships last year, having also claimed world indoor bronze earlier in the season. A strong hurdler and long jumper, Brooks has already competed extensively over the past two months, clocking 12.91 for the 100m hurdles and leaping a wind-assisted 6.87m in the long jump.
Switzerland’s Annik Kälin finished fourth at the 2024 Olympic Games with a national record of 6639 and won world indoor long jump silver last year. The last heptathlon she completed was in Götzis last year, where she placed fifth with 6395, but was a non-starter at the World Championships.
Others to watch include German duo Sophie Weissenberg and Sandrina Sprengel, both of whom have PBs above 6400; Commonwealth bronze medallist Jade O’Dowda of Great Britain, who finished eighth at last year’s World Championships; and Austria’s 2018 world indoor silver medallist Ivona Dadic Glavas.

Five global title winners will clash in the men’s decathlon at the Hypo Meeting in Götzis this weekend

Neugebauer leads loaded decathlon line-up in Götzis

Anna Hall and Sander Skotheim have been confirmed as the winners of the 2025 World Athletics Combined Events Tour, which rewards their season-long consistency in the heptathlon and decathlon, respectively.
The Combined Events Tour takes each athlete’s best three marks across the series and converts them into result scores (also used as the basis of the world rankings system). Winners of the Combined Events Tour, which features both indoor and outdoor meetings, receive a US$30,000 prize.

Hall produced the three best heptathlon performances in the world this year. She won at the Hypo Meeting in Gotzis with 7032, elevating her to equal second on the world all-time list. She followed that with a 6899 victory at the US Championships and then capped the best season of her career by winning the world title in Tokyo with 6888.
It meant she topped the end-of-season Combined Events Tour standings with a score of 3781, the highest tally ever achieved in the tour’s current format.
Hall’s US compatriot Taliyah Brooks finished second in the tour for the second year in a row. Brooks started her year by earning her first global medal, taking bronze at the World Indoor Championships in Nanjing. She then finished second in Talence and at the US Championships, setting a PB of 6526 at the latter. She improved on that to take bronze at the World Championships with 6581.

Anna Hall and Sander Skotheim have been confirmed as the winners of the 2025 World Athletics Combined Events Tour

Hall and Skotheim win World Athletics Combined Events Tour

Ondrej Kopecky set a meeting record to win the decathlon at the Wiesław Czapiewski Memorial this weekend (26-27), while Adrianna Sulek-Schubert completed a hat-trick of heptathlon wins at the World Athletics Combined Events Tour Gold event in the Polish town of Naklo nad Notecia.
Czechia’s Kopecky scored 8254 points to triumph ahead of his compatriot Vilem Strasky, who set a PB of 8136. Estonia’s Risto Lillemets finished third on 8107.
Poland’s Sulek-Schubert – who was coached by the late Wieslaw Czapiewski, in whose honour the meeting is held – followed her victories in 2022 and 2024 by scoring 6287 points to triumph for a third time. That score missed her own meeting record by just three points and secured her the title by 38 points ahead of Germany’s Vanessa Grimm. Austria’s Verena Mayr was third on 6159.
Dutch athlete Sven Jansons took the early lead in the decathlon, topping the 100m in 10.64 and leaping 7.35m in a long jump won by India’s Tejaswin Shankar (7.57m). Kopecky clocked 11.14 before leaping 7.36m.
Kopecky moved from sixth to fourth after three events, throwing 14.35m in a shot put contest won by Rafał Horbowicz (15.55m). Finley Gaio took overall top spot at that point, ahead of Strasky, Jansons and Kopecky.
Shankar soared into the lead after the high jump, clearing 2.18m for a mark 15 centimetres higher than any of his rivals could manage. Kopecky cleared 1.91m and remained in fourth place overall.
Shankar held on to the lead overnight, finishing the first day with 4292 points – 155 ahead of runner-up Strasky – after clocking 48.87 in the 400m. Max Attwell went quickest overall with a PB of 47.50, while Kopecky clocked 49.34 and ended the day placed sixth (4048).
Strasky and Kopecky secured the strongest start to day two, respectively clocking 14.13 and 14.14 in the 110m hurdles.
For Kopecky, it was the discus that made the difference. With a PB of 49.10m, he hurled himself into the overall lead with a performance more than two metres farther than the rest of the field. Lillemets (46.90m), Gaio (45.56m) and Jansons (42.35m) also threw PBs and Gaio moved into second place overall – 5857 to 5826.
Kopecky maintained the momentum with a clearance of 5.10m to top the pole vault. Strasky was next best with 4.90m and moved into second place ahead of Lillemets.
Those positions would remain through to the end of the contest, Kopecky extending his lead to 165 points after the javelin (58.66m), which was topped by Lillemets (60.35m).
Attwell achieved another PB to win the 1500m (4:17.85), but Kopecky’s 4:30.95 was enough to clinch him overall victory ahead of Strasky (4:23.97) and Lillemets (4:27.90).
Shankar finished fourth with a PB of 7826, while Attwell finished fifth with 7822 – also a PB.
Sulek-Schubert opened her heptathlon campaign with the fastest 100m hurdles of the day, 13.38. She then cleared 1.77m in the high jump, a height also managed by Grimm and Bianca Salming.

Grimm topped the shot put with a heave of 14.91m while Sulek-Schubert managed 13.98m, and that put Grimm 24 points ahead after three events – 2826 to 2802.
But Sulek-Schubert regained the lead after winning the 200m in 24.00, the 2022 world indoor silver medallist ending the first day in top spot with 3783 points – 47 ahead of Grimm.
Sulek-Schubert maintained her lead on day two, starting Sunday with the farthest long jump mark of 6.22m and following that with a 38.50m throw – a mark that put her ninth in the javelin standings but saw her hold on to the overall top spot by 14 points ahead of Grimm (42.85m) with one event to go. Salming topped the javelin with 49.90m, while Mayr managed a PB of 44.13m.
It all came down to the 800m, won by Sophia Mulder in a PB of 2:08.58. Mayr was second in the race in 2:09.28 and Sulek-Schubert crossed the finish line third in 2:11.22 to triumph overall – holding off Grimm who ran 2:12.84.
Paulina Ligarska, who recently beat Sulek-Schubert to the Polish title, finished fourth on 6137 and Mulder was fifth on 5865.

Kopecky breaks meeting record, Sulek-Schubert retains title in Naklo nad Notecia

Adrianna Sulek-Schubert will defend her heptathlon title at the Czapiewski Memorial this weekend (26-27), but the 2022 world indoor silver medallist may not have it all her own way at the World Athletics Combined Events Tour Gold meeting in the Polish town of Naklo nad Notecia.
She’ll be up against compatriot Paulina Ligarska, who recently beat Sulek-Schubert to the Polish title, as well as 2019 world bronze medallist Verena Mayr and Germany’s Vanessa Grimm.
Sulek-Schubert – who was coached by the late Wieslaw Czapiewski, in whose honour the meeting is held – has twice won at this meeting. She set a meeting record of 6290 at the inaugural edition in 2022, then returned last year to win with 6007.
The 2022 European silver medallist, who has the best PB (6672) of the heptathlon field this weekend, didn’t finish the heptathlon in Götzis earlier this year, but she scored 6071 to finish second to Ligarska at the Polish Championships last month.
Ligarska scored 6189 on that occasion, just 52 points shy of her PB. More recently, she placed fifth in Arona with 5972, and she currently sits third in the Combined Events Tour standings.
Austria’s 2019 world bronze medallist Verena Mayr will also be in contention. A 6591 performer at her best, she recently finished seventh in Talence with 6083.
Vanessa Grimm finished two places ahead of Mayr on that occasion, scoring a season’s best of 6195. If the German is able to reproduce that this weekend, it could be enough to win.
Australia’s Tori West and Ukraine’s Daryna Sloboda are also ones to watch, as are Swedish duo Lovisa Karlsson and Bianca Salming.
Like Sulek-Schubert, Ondrej Kopecky will be looking for another victory this weekend. This meeting holds fond memories for the 27-year-old as it’s where he first broke 8000 points, scoring 8041 with his victory in 2022. Just three weeks later, he went on to improve his PB to 8310.
He didn’t finish any of his decathlons last year, but he recently won the Czech title with 8057.
Antoine Ferranti heads to Naklo nad Notecia with the highest season’s best of the decathlon field. The 22-year-old started the year with a PB of 7757, which he bettered in Brescia in April with 7885. He then won in Arona last month with a big PB of 8221 and last weekend took bronze at the European U23 Championships in Bergen with 8032.
Provided he has recovered sufficiently from his last two decathlons, Ferranti will start as one of the favourites this weekend.
Estonian duo Kristjan Rosenberg and Risto Lillemets are also ones to watch. Lillemets, the 2023 European indoor bronze medallist, recently placed sixth in Talence with 8020. Rosenberg hasn’t contested a decathlon so far this year, but boasts a PB of 8299.
Pawel Wiesiolek has the best PB of the field with 8333, but the last time the 33-year-old bettered 8000 points was at the 2021 Olympics, where he finished 12th. Nevertheless, the Pole will have the support of the home crowd.
Vilem Strasky and Malik Diakite, who finished second and third behind Ferranti in Arona last month, will also be in contention, as will Switzerland’s Finley Gaio.

Adrianna Sulek-Schubert will defend her heptathlon title at the Czapiewski Memorial this weekend

Sulek-Schubert targets third win at Czapiewski Memorial

Puerto Rico’s Ayden Owens-Delerme won the decathlon on his Decastar debut, while Colombia’s Martha Araujo clinched her second consecutive heptathlon crown at the World Athletics Combined Events Tour Gold meeting in Talence on Saturday and Sunday (5-6).
Owens-Delerme scored 8478 to triumph by 242 points ahead of defending champion Johannes Erm of Estonia, while Araujo retained her title ahead of USA’s Taliyah Brooks and Michelle Atherley by scoring 6451.
Owens-Delerme took an early lead in the decathlon with a 10.48 run in the 100m, but Kendrick Thompson of The Bahamas moved into top spot after the long jump, leaping 7.70m to Owens-Delerme’s 7.44m.
The Puerto Rican regained pole position thanks to a 16.13m heave in the shot put, but again it was short-lived as France’s Teo Bastien jumped to the top of the standings after clearing 2.06m in the high jump.
Owens-Delerme ran a meeting record of 46.43 in the 400m to finish the day with a leading tally of 4469 and that was a position that he wouldn’t relinquish. Thompson covered a lap of the track in 48.56 to move into second place, while Erm’s 48.13 was one of the fastest of the day and the Estonian sat in fourth place overnight behind Bastien.
Owens-Delerme picked up from where he left off, winning the first event of day two – the 110m hurdles – in 13.72. Thompson clocked 14.19 and Bastien 14.26 and that meant they held on to their podium positions after six events, remaining ahead of Erm and Belgium’s Jente Hauttekeete, who were separated by just two points at that stage.
Estonia’s Rasmus Roosleht left it late but after two fouls he managed 47.77m from his third and final attempt in the discus to top that event and move into fifth place overall behind Owens-Delerme (44.38m), Bastien (43.58m), Erm (46.02m) and Thompson (39.98m).
Hauttekeete was in sixth place and Germany’s 2019 world champion Niklas Kaul was seventh, but that would prove to be the final event for Kaul as he did not return for the pole vault, javelin or 1500m.
Erm, Hauttekeete, Bastien and Estonia’s Risto Lillemets all managed 4.93m in the pole vault but Owens-Delerme held on to top spot after clearing 4.73m – 178 points ahead with two events to go.
Thompson was the sole athlete to surpass 60 metres in the javelin, throwing 61.44m, and that moved him back up to fourth overall behind leader Owens-Delerme, who managed 55.50m in the wet conditions, plus Bastien (55.84m) and Erm (53.53m).
Owens-Delerme closed his campaign with one final win, clocking 4:29.78 in the 1500m, to take him to a tally of 8478. Erm ran 4:32.45, contributing to his 8236 points for second place, while Thompson’s 4:39.73 moved him up one more place and on to the podium with a final score of 8177.
Hauttekeete (8123), Bastien (8102) and Lillemets (8020) also broke the 8000-point barrier, Bastien doing so for the first time to improve on his previous PB of 7976 from 2023.
The women’s heptathlon got off to a strong start with Atherley equalling the meeting record of 12.88 in the 100m hurdles. Her US compatriot Brooks was marginally behind in 12.91, with Araujo also breaking 13 seconds (12.97).
World U20 champion Jana Koscak moved up the standings after the high jump with her 1.82m leap being the best of the day, but a 1.79m clearance from Brooks kept the world indoor bronze medallist in the lead. Araujo and Atherley were third and fourth overall, within touching distance of Koscak.
Koscak took a brief lead after the shot put, thanks to the Croatian’s throw of 13.91m. Brooks threw 13.39m and held on to second place overall, ahead of Araujo (13.55m). Austria’s 2019 world bronze medallist Verena Mayr (14.70m) and Germany’s Vanessa Grimm (15.03m) were among the leading performers in the shot put and they moved into fourth and fifth overall.
Brooks regained her lead in the final discipline of the first day, the 200m, running a solid 23.87 to bring her leading tally to 3850. Araujo ended with 24.11, giving her a score of 3791 – slightly ahead of her pace from Götzis, where she set her recent South American record of 6475 to finish third. Koscak’s 24.94 kept her in contention, while Lithuania’s Beatrice Juskeviciute (23.64) and Atherley (23.66) made up some ground.
Brooks and Araujo were separated by just seven centimetres when the action resumed on day two with the long jump – Brooks leaping 6.33m and Araujo 6.40m. With Koscak managing 6.10m, there was no change to the top three overall.
As expected, Araujo showed her strength in the javelin and she soared into the lead with a throw of 49.44m. That put her 142 points ahead of Brooks (40.14m) with one event to go, while Juskeviciute moved up to third overall thanks to her 47.20m throw and she sat just eight points ahead of Koscak (43.10m) – 5373 to 5365.
Atherley topped the final event – the 800m – by running 2:06.68 and that pushed her on to the podium with 6283 points. Brooks and Araujo respectively ran 2:15.02 and 2:19.09, and that was enough for them to clinch the top two spots – Araujo successfully defending her title with 6451 points, the second-best tally of her career, and Brooks scoring 6365, also her second highest ever performance. Juskeviciute finished fourth with 6271.

Puerto Rico’s Ayden Owens-Delerme won the decathlon on his Decastar debut, while Colombia’s Martha Araujo clinched her second consecutive heptathlon crown

Owens-Delerme wins decathlon, Araujo retains heptathlon title in Talence

Estonia’s Johannes Erm and Colombia’s Martha Araujo, winners of Decastar last year, will be up against quality opposition when they defend their titles at the World Athletics Combined Events Tour Gold meeting in Talence this weekend (5-6).
Erm won the decathlon in Talence last year with 8589, capping a memorable season that also included European gold, with a PB of 8764, and a sixth-place finish at the Olympic Games. He has carried that momentum through to 2025, earning world indoor silver with a national heptathlon record of 6437.
The 27-year-old has contested just one outdoor competition so far this year, a three-discipline ‘triathlon’ at the Bislett Games in Oslo, where he clocked 14.54 in the 110m hurdles, long jumped 7.09m and threw 56.29m in the javelin.
He’ll be up against several men who have already put down a strong decathlon marker this season.
Niklas Kaul is one of those. The German finished equal third in Götzis five weeks ago with 8575, the second-best score of his career behind the 8691 PB he set when winning the 2019 world title.
Puerto Rico’s Ayden Owens-Delerme finished a few positions behind Kaul in Götzis, placing seventh with a season’s best of 8486. The 25-year-old, whose PB of 8732 was set last year, will be chasing the World Championships qualifying standard of 8550 with a view to making it to Tokyo in September and improving on the fourth-place finish he achieved at the 2022 World Championships.
Karel Tilga also knows what it’s like to finish just outside of the medals at a World Championships; the Estonian placed fourth in Budapest two years ago, setting a PB of 8681. More recently he placed ninth in Götzis with a season’s best of 8405, making him the top performing Estonian this year.
Several others in the field – including Germany’s Tim Nowak, Belgium’s Jente Hauttekeete and Estonian duo Rasmus Roosleht and Niels Pittomvils – will be chasing either the World Championships qualifying standard or world ranking points.
The same is true of most of the contender in the women’s heptathlon.
Defending Decastar champion Araujo has enjoyed a strong season so far, winning the South American title with 6396 and then finishing third in Götzis with 6475 – a 46-point improvement on the continental record she set in Talence last year.
The 29-year-old, who finished seventh at the Olympics last year, is now looking for a further 25-point improvement so that she can secure the World Championships qualifying standard.
She’ll be pushed all the way by US duo Michelle Atherley and Taliyah Brooks, both of whom should contend for victory this weekend.
Atherley, the overall winner of the World Athletics Combined Events Tour last year, recently finished fourth in Götzis with 6425, just 40 points shy of her PB. After finishing third in Talence last year, she’s targeting a higher place on the podium this time.
Brooks, who represented the USA at the 2023 World Championships and 2024 Olympics, took world indoor bronze earlier this year. Having posted some strong individual marks outdoors, she’ll be keen to improve on her PB of 6408 in what will be her first heptathlon of 2025.
Austria’s also Verena Mayr returns to Talence. The 30-year-old has the best PB of the field (6591), though that was set back in 2019, the year in which she earned world bronze.
Germany’s Vanessa Grimm, who placed fourth at this year’s World Indoor Championships, and world U20 champion Jana Koscak of the Czech Republic are among the other podium contenders.

Defending champions Erm and Araujo face tough opposition in Talence

With respective scores of 8221 and 6061 points, France’s Antoine Ferranti and Sweden’s Lovisa Karlsson were the winners at the International Meeting of Arona – the second Gold leg of the World Athletics Combined Events Tour – in Tenerife this weekend (21-22).
The 25-year-old Karlsson took the lead at the start of the second day and led a trio of 6000-point-plus athletes in the heptathlon, while the 22-year-old Ferranti improved his previous PB by a huge margin to break the 8000-point barrier for the first time in the decathlon.
The men's opening events were dominated by Spain's Tayb David Loum and Switzerland's Finley Gaio. The 21-year-old Spaniard won the 100m in 10.65 to Gaio's 10.72, but the Swiss athlete took the lead after the second event thanks to a 7.51m leap in the long jump to Loum's 7.41m, with Germany's defending champion Malik Diakite sandwiched between them after a 7.42m effort. By then, Gaio led with 1861 points and had an eight-point advantage on Loum.
The morning session closed with a local win by Bruno Comín in the shot put with a 14.92m toss, just one centimetre farther than Venezuela's Gerson Izaguirre, while Gaio managed to keep his overall lead after finishing fifth with 14.04m.
The afternoon session opened with a quality high jump contest, the victory going to Spain's Pablo Martinez thanks to a third-time 2.12m clearance, while Ferranti set a lifetime best of 2.09m to take the overall top spot with 3327 points to Loum's 3285 and Gaio's 3262. The 400m proved to be a close fight between Spain's Pablo Gámez and Gaio, the Spaniard prevailing by the narrowest of margins, 48.07 to 48.08.
At the end of day one, Ferranti was at the helm on 4200 points, 33 points ahead of Gaio. Loum was third (4152), while Vilem Strasky of Czechia achieved a balanced day to stay in fourth (4123).
On the second day, Izaguirre – eighth overall – was the fastest in the 110m hurdles with 14.00 ahead of Spain’s Jorge Ureña, who set a career best of 14.12, while Ferranti placed fifth despite setting a PB of 14.51. That was still enough for him to keep the overall top spot by two points on Gaio.
Izaguirre also struck in the discus thanks to a 46.89m PB, while Gaio regained a narrow lead as he scored 20 points more than Ferranti following their respective throws of 41.32m and 40.33m. But the French athlete bounced back strongly in the pole vault, being the only athlete over 5.00m, a career best, with Gaio managing a best of 4.40m to lose the top spot.
Ferranti had a score of 6691 to lead by 149 points with two events remaining, while Izaguirre moved into second place following a 4.60m clearance.
The javelin was topped by Diakite thanks to a 66.20m throw and Ferranti strengthened his overall lead on Izaguirre – 58.82m to 57.36m – to virtually secure his overall victory before the 1500m, one of his strongest events. In the end, the French athlete won in 4:20.25 to become the only athlete to exceed the 8000-point barrier. Strasky finished runner-up with 7972 and last year’s victor Diakite was third (7889).

Marsh dominates on day one but Karlsson prevails

USA's Erin Marsh lived up to expectation in the opening 100m hurdles as she took a convincing win in 13.28, while both New Zealand’s Briana Stephenson and Karlsson clocked 13.40, just 0.01 ahead of Portugal's Mariana Bento with a PB. The main favourite, Poland's Paulina Ligarska, had to settle for a 13.95 clocking and was 98 points down on Marsh at that stage.
The high jump witnessed a win by another US athlete, Lexie Keller, who was the sole athlete over 1.75m. That was three centimetres higher than Ligarska and Stephenson, among others, with Marsh and Karlsson managing 1.69m.
The afternoon session opened with a win by France's defending champion Elisa Pineau in the shot put thanks to a 14.38m heave from her opening and only valid attempt. USA’s Shaina Burns also surpassed the 14-metre mark thanks to a 14.17m final effort. Saturday's closing 200m was taken by Finland's Vilma Italinna in 23.98, closely followed by Marsh (24.02) and with Stephenson a further 0.15 adrift.
Marsh led at the end of day one thanks to a 3659 tally – a generous margin of 105 points on Karlsson, who was 10 points clear of Keller. Ligarska was another three points behind (3541).
On day two, Karlsson leapt 6.45m to top the long jump ahead of Briton Thea Brown, who set a PB of 6.36m. Marsh could not exceed 6.06m and was overtaken by the Swedish athlete by 18 points.
Pineau managed her second individual win in the discus with a 44.03m effort, while Karlsson extended her overall lead as she threw 39.38m to Marsh’s 35.90m to face the closing 800m some 84 points clear of Marsh, 5200 and 5114 their respective scores. Keller was another 11 points adrift.
The final event featured a win for Ligarska but her 2:12.43 was not enough to assault the leading places, while Karlsson’s sixth place in 2:17.26 was enough to capture the overall victory. Her 6061 points saw her finish 22 points ahead of Marsh, who was 13 clear of Keller.

France’s Antoine Ferranti and Sweden’s Lovisa Karlsson were the winners at the International Meeting of Arona

Ferranti and Karlsson triumphant in Arona

Defending champions Elisa Pineau and Malik Diakite take on a closely-matched field in Arona, Tenerife, this weekend (21-22) for the second Gold level meeting on the 2025 World Athletics Combined Events Tour.
Paulina Ligarska heads to Arona fresh from winning the Polish title in Warsaw earlier this month with 6189, just 52 points off her PB from 2022. This year she has set PBs at 200m (24.37), 800m (2:09.76) and long jump (6.15m indoors).
Pan-American champion Erin Marsh could be the Pole’s toughest opponent. The US heptathlete added 140 points to her PB in Götzis a few weeks ago with a score of 6171, a series that included PBs of 12.93 in the 100m hurdles and 23.60 in the 200m.
Lovisa Karlsson is the only other heptathlon entrant to have bettered 6000 points this season, having scored 6026 in Götzis. She set her PB of 6146 at last year's Europeans Championships in Rome where the 25-year-old finished 10th.
Austria's 2018 world indoor silver medallist Ivona Dadic is also one to watch. Her PB of 6552, which is the best of the Arona field, dates back to 2018, while her best score last year was 6115.
France’s Elisa Pineau, the winner in Arona last year with 6020, will defend her title. She didn’t complete her heptathlon in Brescia in April, but she managed a shot put PB of 14.90m there.
Ashtin Zamzow-Mahler, who has a PB of 6291 and finished 11th at the 2022 World Championships, and US compatriot Shaina Burns, a 6130 performer, will also be looking to complete their first heptathlon of the year.
Vilem Strasky’s busy season continues in the decathlon; in fact, Sunday’s contest will be his third decathlon of the month, having scored 7918 in Götzis and 7964 last weekend at the Czech Championships. The 25-year-old, who placed fifth at the World Indoor Championships earlier this year, will be aiming to get close to his PB of 8088 from last year.
Local hopes rest with 2019 European indoor champion Jorge Ureña. The 31-year-old, who’ll be making his outdoor season debut, has the best PB of the field (8381).
Malik Diakite, the winner in Arona last year, is back again and looking to make amends after failing to finish his last decathlon in Papenburg last month. German compatriot Marcel Meyer, an 8190 performer, is also set to compete, as is Switzerland’s Finley Gaio, looking to improve on his 7917 outing in Götzis a few weeks ago.
Sweden’s Marcus Nilsson, the victor here in 2022, recently completed his first decathlon in almost three years, scoring 7674 in Brescia in April and is now hoping to build on that in Arona. The 34-year-old is an 8327 performer at his best.
Weather forecasters predict a mild and sunny weekend with pleasant temperatures ranging between 20-23C.
