series meeting of 2005 Australian season which was held in Canberra today was topped out by the 8.18m Long Jump victory of Tim Parravicini, who thereby cemented his place among the top long jumpers in Australian history.
The 24-year-old Parravicini showed he is well and truly over his injuries of the last two years, leaping a massive 8.18m (wind 1.7m/s), the fifth best leap ever by an Australian, behind greats such as Jai Taurima, Peter Burge, Gary Honey and Shane Hair.
It was also a new personal best for the 24-year-old who had leapt to 8.06m (his previous PB) in Canberra on 4 December last year and had followed that up with 7.94m on 18 December. Another four competitive outings prior to today had produced nothing of the same quality. Prior to 2004 he had first jumped 8.00 (windy, in 2002), with multiple jumps at 7.94 registered as his previous wind legal PB.
"I’m pretty stoked, so happy I did it… there’s more inside me… looking forward to Melbourne A-series (IAAF GPII),” confirmed Parravicini.
Also in the Long Jump, 17-year-old Chris Noffke set a new national under-18 record, leaping a personal best of 7.80m (wind 1.4m/s). In third place was John Thornell with 7.76m.
In the men's Triple Jump, Britain's Larry Achike won easily with a 16.88m performance.
Ezenwa’s double marred by timing failure
Ambrose Ezenwa of Nigeria (20.49), Cameroon’s Joseph Batangdon (20.56), and Australia’s Daniel Batman (20.58) were the 1-2-3 in the men’s 200m but a great afternoon of sprinting by the Nigerian was marred after a timing equipment failure in the 100m. Ezenwa crossed the line first ahead of Josh Ross – the 10.12 revalation of the opening Telstra-A series in Perth – who was second, with Batman, third. Patrick Johnson was sixth (4th in 200m), and Matt Shirvington was forced to withdraw from the final, due to a minor hamstring strain.
Other highlights…
In the women’s Discus Throw, 17-year-old Dani Samuels was impressive, finishing second in a new under-18 Australian record, of 55.07m.
Lauren Hewitt took a sprint double taking the women’s 100m and 200m in 11.52 and 23.27; Tamsyn Lewis looked strong in the women’s 400m (53.05); Sarah Jamieson won the women’s 3000m in 8:51.12.
