Myburgh’s 48.97 and double by Namibia’s Agnes Samaria highlight South African Champs, Day 2

eThekwini (formerly Durban), South AfricaAlwyn Myburgh stole the headlines on the second and final day of the South African National Championships at Kings Park Athletics Stadium on Saturday (17).

Mozambique and Namibia took advantage of the occasion to enter their best athletes. It is the first time since 1997 that Athletics South Africa has allowed athletes from neighbouring countries to compete at their national championships.

Myburg 'running blind' to first national gold

The 400m Hurdles lived up to its reputation as the country’s blue riband event. Alwyn Myburgh threw caution to the wind leading from the start to clinch victory in a season best of 48.97. The injury-prone Pieter de Villiers (49.20) was runner up ahead of Ockert Cilliers (49.69).

“My goal was to win my first national title. I have been trying without success for seven years and this is great. I concentrated on my own race since I was running blind with all the other top athletes on the inside lanes,” said a delighted Myburgh.

“I put my success down to the change in my running technique. My speed in the first half of the race has improved since I use 13 strides over the first five or six hurdles. This year I hope to better my career best of 48.09,” Myburgh revealed.

Middle distance double for Samaria

Namibia’s Agnes Samaria was the star of the women’s events taking a middle distance double. First she outclassed her opponents by improving her season's best in the 800m by over a second with a winning time of 2:02.70, and then went on to better her Namibian 1500m national record by over three seconds with a winning time of 4:09.59

“I am enjoying training better than ever before. My coach and I are still working on endurance. When we start working on basic speed I expect to be a force to reckoned with,” said Samaria who is a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador.

81.24m secures first senior title for Oosthuizen

World Junior Javelin Throw champion Robert Oosthuizen made a triumphant entry into senior competition. His final and winning throw of 81.24m was inside the World Championships qualifier.

“Last year I won the national and World junior title. My dream this year was to win my first senior national title....This senior title has boosted my confidence and I think what is important is to better my career best of 83.07m,” said Oosthuizen.

Hat-trick for Joseph

The versatile Janice Joseph completed a hat trick of title defences when she clinched the 100m Hurdles title in a time 13.83. Two weeks ago she retained her national Heptathlon title. She went on to equal her Long Jump career best when winning with 6.62m on the first day of these national champs.

“My goal is to be competitive in the Heptathlon in Osaka. So in June I will compete in the event in Arles, France. After the Heptathlon in Osaka, I want to compete in the Long Jump,” said Josephs.

Elsewhere Africa women’s Discus Throw record holder Elizna Naude retained her national title with a 61 metres effort. She had mixed feelings about the outcome.

“I am happy to retain my title and maintain my performance of throwing over 60 metres at every meet this year."

“However, because we were throwing against the wind, I was not able to get the distances I wanted. My aim was to better the Africa record with a throw of at least throw over 64 metres. I am going to train for the next month before resuming competition in Germany in May or June, confirmed Naude.
