Former Commonwealth Games 5000m champion, Sammy Kipketer was forced to dip deep into his reservoir of strength with 200m to go to the finish of the 5000m on the final day of the Kenyan Armed Forces Championships at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, today.
John Cheruiyot Korir, who had won the 10,000m on the opening day on Thursday (8) seemed in control of the 5000m race after taking the lead from Kipketer, John Kibowen, youthful Shadrack Kosgei and Kipkrono Menjo, with five laps to go.
Kipketer tried to close again on Korir with Kibowen and Menjo in hot pursuit but as the bell sounded Korir was still well ahead of his pursuers. Yet Kipketer managed to surge again, and with 200m to go he caught and passed Korir, much to the amusement of the cheering crowd.
Kipketer won in 13:51.0, as Korir was timed in 13:52.3, and Kibowen, came third in 13:58.3.
"It was a tough race which I wasn't going to lose after yesterday's debacle in the 10,000m," said Kipketer.
The upset in the men's 5000m was replicated in the women's race when Irene Kwambai raced past Inness Chenonge, who was leading comfortably until 60 metres to the finish. Kwambai, who had won the 10,000m the previous day, was timed in 15:47.1 as Chenonge followed in 15:48.5, and Jeruto Kiptum came in third in 16:11.6.
Youngstar Elijah Kibwalei upset the men’s 3000m Steeplechase field with a 8:39.3 victory ahead of Abraham Cherono, who was timed in 8:41.7, with David Langat, third (8:42.4). Kipkirui Misoi was fourth in 8:47.0.
