28 May 2001 - Havana - Cuba’s Michel Calvo established a new season’s best in the triple jump on the last day of the Memorial Barrientos in the Panamerican Stadium of Havana.

23-year-old Calvo created the surprise by defeating his older and more famous compatriots with a 17.30m leap, which betters the world leading mark by 7 centimetres.

The 1996 world junior silver medallist, Calvo also equaled his personal best which dated back to 1997. He defeated Olympic silver medallist Joel Garcia (16.77), World junior silver medallist Yoandri Betanzos (16.69), 1997 World Champion Yoelbi Quesada (16.55) and world indoor record holder Aliecer Urrutia (16.46).

The conclusive day of the Memorial Barrientos also witnessed victories for high jump world record holder Javier Sotomayor and 400m hurdles World Champion Daimi Pernia. Sotomayor launched his outdoor season with a 2.24m clearance, narrowly missing 2.30m while Pernia clocked 55.87 for her season’s debut.

Jamaica’s Neil Gardner clocked 49.75 in the 400m hurdles for the only non-Cuban victory of the day.

Jamaica finished with two gold medals, Argentina ended up with one gold while Colombia earned two silvers and one bronze, and the Dominican Republic one silver and one bronze. Puerto Rico and El Salvador won one bronze medal each. Cuban athletes, for whom the Memorial Barrientos were their national championships, won all the other medals.
