Athletes from Kerala dominated the four day National inter-state senior athletic championships which concluded here at the Tatya Tope Stadium on Thursday (20 Sep) evening.

Kerala topped the medals tally with 11 gold, 9 silver and an equal number of bronze medals.  Spearheading the champion-state’s success were its middle distance runners.

Kerala’s O.P. Jaisha, the Asian Indoor Games gold medallist in 2005, running in her major competition after a nine months lay-off after the last year’s Asian Games in Doha where she got a bronze in 5000m, easily overcame stiff competition from her training partners in the 5000m and 1500m.

Sreedharan Preeja, the reigning South Asian Games gold medallist in 10,000m, had remained unbeaten on home-soil throughout this season till Jaisha (16:21.06) pushed her into second spot on the opening day’s 5000m. In the 1500m, Jaisha inflicted a defeat on Sinimol Paulose, another athlete of Kerala origin who preferred to run for Jharkhand here.  Paulose, the Asian championship silver medallist at Amman who has virtually ruled the metric mile sweeping the entire Asian GP series this year took the initial lead, but could not match the “burst” finish of Jaisha (4:14.71).

Jaisha along with her team-mate Chatholi Hamza, the winner of men’s 1500m, were adjudged as the best female and male athletes of the championships.  Hamza, the regional south asian games champ, ran the second fastest time in his career- 3:40.40.

Bengal’s Harishankar Roy (21), another athlete who had opted for Jharkhand colours, sailed over 2.22m for a new championship record.  Although 3cm short of his personal best and national record (2.25m) he set while winning a silver medal in the Asian All-stars athletic meet at Singapore three years ago, Roy is getting ready for the Asian Indoor Games slated to be held in Macau, later this year.

The only national record of the meet came from walker Babubhai Panocha of Gujarat.  He walked to 20,000m in a time of 1:25:09.36 for the achievement.
