Mikhnevich reaches 21.30m, Rybakov over 2.32 at Belarus Cup

There was a fine display of shot putting at at the Belarus National Indoor Cup in Mogilev on Saturday (30). Andrei Mikhnevich, the 2008 Olympic Bronze medallist and former World champion reached 21.30m while Pavel Lyzhyn, who finished sixth at the World Championships in Berlin last summer, improved his lifetime best to 21.12m.

Solid also was the women's competition won by 2000 Olympic champion Yanina Pravalinskaya-Karolchyk, who achieved 18.78m. The 2009 European junior champion, Alyona Hryshko, also improved her career best to 18.12m.

“I hoped to reach 19 metres,” Pravalinskaya-Karolchyk said. “Now I’ll be preparing for the national championship where there will be more serious opponents, Natallia Mikhnevich and Nadzeya Ostapchuk. I don’t plan to participate in Doha and I'm looking to the summer season.”

Elsewhere, Russian guest Yaroslav Rybakov, the World champion in the High Jump, was content with his 2.32m clearance.

“Now I'm preparing for Doha,” he said. “I think that at the World Indoor Championships all opponents in the High Jump will be very strong, but the main applicants for medals will be Russians, and the main battle will be at 2.37.”

There was a new national record of 4.35m in the women's Pole Vault by former Russian Anastasiya Shvedova who now represents Belarus.

Other Belarusian winners: Natallia Kareiva in the 1500m – 4:11.02, Siarhei Platonau at 1500m – 3:47.75, Sviatlana Usovich at 400m – 53.16, Aliona Kievich at 200m – 23.57, Anna Bahdanovich at 60m – 7.38, Alina Talai at 60m Hurdles with 8.22, Ksenia Dziatsuk (Pryiomka) in the Triple Jump – 13.94m, and Dmitry Dziatsuk in the men's Triple Jump with a 16.78m leap.
