Edith Masai, a threetime World cross country short course champion completed am historic double victory as she added the 5000m title to the 10,000m crown she won on Friday as the Kenyan Championships ended today.

Running a thoroughly calculated race, Masai, who made history as the oldest woman to win a medal at 33 when she won a bronze medal at the 2002 World Cross Country Championships, waited for Mercy Njoroge, Athens Olympic 5000m silver medallist Isabella Ochichi, and Sylvia Jebiwott to lead the pace until 300m to go when she attacked.

On the home stretch, she used her long and majestic strides to romp home in 15:54.0.

Ochichi, who has been indisposed since returning from Fukuoka in April, was second in 15:54.3 with Jebiwott third in 15:54.6.

"I will only run one race in Mauritius, although I have won the two, said Masai, now 39. "I am glad to perform like this and I am looking forward for the best."

Ochichi, was happy to finish among the top three and promised to work hard for a good placing in Mauritius. Since her 5000m victory at the Commonwealth Games, Ochichi has been busy on the roads, notching 10 Km wins in New Orleans and Vancouver and over 12 Km in Spokane. In her last outing on the track, Ochichi won the 5000 at the Cardinal Invitational in late April.

Jeruto Kiptum, the bronze medallist in the Steeplechase at last year's World Championships in Helsinki, again reigned over her speciality winning in 9:53.01 after leading from the half-way mark. Beatrice Korir was a distant second in 10:08.1 as Tabitha Chelagat and Jackline Chemwok were third and fourth in 10:17.3 and 10:18.1 respectively.

Among the day's highlights were Elizabeth Muthoka's hat trick in 100m (11.6), 200m (24.4) and 400m (53.6). Florence Wakisa won a hurdles double, winning the 100m Hurdles in 14.9 and the full-lap version in 57.8.

Kombich surprises Kipchirchir

Commonwealth Games 800m champion Alex Kipchirchir was beaten to second place in the two-lap race after waiting too long to react. He was edged by Ishmael Kombich who won in 1:44.9 to Kipchirchir's 1:45.0. Kombich, just 20 and a Commonwealth Games finalist in the 1500, has raced often over 800m this spring, including a five-race stretch in nine days in early June.

Olympic steeplechase champion, Ezekiel Kemboi, beat Abraham Cherono at the final water jump to win the race in 8:21.5 for his third victory in four races in the event this year. Cherono followed in 8:23.3.

Moses Mosop, the bronze medallist in the 10,000m in Helsinki last year, beat a strong field to a sprint finish to win the event in 28:18.1. John Cheruiyot Korir was second in 28:20.5 with Wilfred Taragon third in 28:22.2.
