Filippidis clears 5.62m at Greek Indoor champs

Pole vaulter Costas Filippidis verified his good shape this season at the Greek National Championships, held in Athens over the weekend. He cleared 5.62m and attempted unsuccessfully to improve his own national record to 5.72m.

Filippidis, set the current record of 5.70m in Manchester in January and after his winning performance in Athens he secured his participation at the World Indoor Championships in Doha.

The highlights of the championships should also include some more good performances.

In the men’s 60m, the 22-year-old sprinter Angelos Angelakis was the winner with 6.69, also meeting the standard for the World Indoor Championships. Anastasia Andriopoulou got the national title winning the women’s race with 7.64.

In the women’s Pole Vault, the national record holder Nicoleta Kyriakopoulou was the winner with 4.45m, while Cyprus’ Mariana Zachariadi was second with 4.35m.

Dimitrios Diamantaras managed to reach the top of the long jump in the last round, where he reached 7.89m. In the High Jump Antonios Mastoras won with 2.21m although he missed the Doha standard of 2.28m. Antonia Stergiou dominated the women’s competition with 1.86m.

Seven athletes to represent Greece in Doha

After the end of the championships, the list of athletes who have the standards for the World Indoor Championships can be finalized.

Besides Costas Filippidis and Angelos Angelakis, five more athletes have met the standards for the most important event of the indoor season.

This season Michalis Stamatoyiannis managed to break the national record in the Shot Put, the oldest one in the books. Stamatoyiannis won a national meeting in Peania (17 Feb) with 20.36m to improve a record which had stood for 24 years.

Kyriakopoulou broke the national record in the Pole Vault jumping 4.50m on 2 February. In this event Afrodoti Skafida, who cleared 4.45m in the same meeting, will be the second Greek participant in Doha.

Athanassia Perra is the only triple jumper who has exceeded the 14m barrier this year, having a season’s best at 14.07 since 17 February. In the men’s event Dimitrios Tsiamis jumped 17.04m at the beginning of February winning the last ticket for Doha.
