Wilson 13.22, Forsythe 10.09 in Liège

Liège, BelgiumIdeal weather conditions contributed to a number of fine performances at the International Athletics Meeting of the province of Liège on Tuesday (13). The most intense events were the Men’s 100m where Mario Forsythe emerged as a winner in 10.09 and the Men’s 110m Hurdles that produced a high level duel won by Ryan Wilson against Joel Brown in 13.22.

Another PB for Forsythe


The Jamaican Forsythe upset Travis Padgett (USA) and Steve Mullings (JAM) in the Men’s 100m and emerged as a winner in a close finish in 10.09 with Padgett second in 10.10 and Mullings third in 10.12. Last week the 25-year-old Forsythe brought his 100m PB down to 10.11 in Rethymno and lowered his 200m personal best to 20.43 in Heusden-Zolder. He now continued his winning and record breaking streak against a strong field in Liège.

Another nice piece of sprinting power was delivered by Wilson and Brown in the 110m Hurdles. Both Americans ran side by side from start to finish and pushed each other to fast times : a meeing record of 13.22 for Wilson and a seasonal best of 13.24 for Brown.

Damu Cherry confirmed her consistent shape in winning the 100m Hurdles in 12.69. Her compatriot Gloria Asunmu was the dominating sprinter in the 100m in 11.18.

Odumosu and Gaymon strong at 400m Hurdles

Ajoke Odumosu (NGR) proved to be strong in the latter stages of the 400m Hurdles when she overtook the leading Belgian Elodie Ouedraogo. Odumosu finished in a winning time of 55.14 with Ouedraogo clocking 56.10. Equally strong in the 400m Hurdles was Justin Gaymon of the USA. He won in 48.98 ahead of Stanislaw Melnik from Ukraine in 49.46 and Michal Bultheel from Belgium in 49.51.

Kenia Sinclair (JAM) was overtaken by Erin Donohue in the 800m who set a personal best of 1:59.99 on the distance, significantly lowering her PB of 2.01.12 that she set in Liège in 2007. The Men’s 800m went to Belal Mansoor Ali (BRN) in 1:45.81.

Mercy Wanjiku Njoroge broke away from a leading group of five in the Women’s 3000m Steeplechase and was only followed by Korene Hinds. The Kenyan beat the Jamaican in a sprint finish in 9:34.28 again 9:35.15.

Jacob Cheshari won the second fastest 3000m of 2010 in 7:38.53 ahead of Vincent Rono who was the fastest of a following group of three in 7:41.18.

Schulze vaults 5.70m

Fabian Schulze was one of the attractions on the infield. The German was lead throughout the Pole Vault competition by Fabio Gomes Da Silva from Brasil but of the four remaining contenders at 5.70m he was the only one able to cross the bar at that height.

Petia Dacheva won the Triple Jump in a thrilling duel against Svetlana Bolshakova who received massive support from the 5000 strong home crowd. The Bulgarian powered to 14.33m while the Belgian had to settle for 14.21m.

“I beat the national record (14.53m) at the European Cup and finished third at the IAAF Diamond League meeting in Lausanne last week,” said Bolshakova. “Coming into this competition I felt a little tired and I was slightly injured, but the crowd lifted me up. I jumped well and I enjoyed the atmosphere a lot.”

Wei Lee Hup from Malaysia won the High Jump on countback against Keith Moffatt (USA). Both jumped 2.27m.
