Karamjit Kaur of Punjab Police vaulted over 3.50 metres to improve her own national mark by 5 cms and Y.Bala Devi representing West Bengal walked 4 minutes faster than the existing record in the grueling 20,000m walk on the concluding day of the 9th Federation Cup Senior Athletic Meet here yesterday.

The G.M.C. Balayogi Stadium in Gachibowli near here, which had been the venue for the inaugural Asian Grand Prix Meet and last year’s National Games and which will be the main stadium for the inaugural Afro-Asian Games in October this year, witnessed a rather disappointing turnout of star athletes in the three day FedCup meet.

The reason for this was that many Indian athletes preferred to stay away from this Meet in order to save their energy to peak at the time of the Asian Championships rather than attempt to qualify for the World Championships.

However, at least one athlete tried with determination for the Paris standard. The brave woman high jumper Bobby Aloysius narrowly missed the norm of 1.92m after having sailed over the cross bar at 1.89m for a seasonal best. This victory however earned her the best athlete of the meet on the women’s side.

Kuldeep Kumar of Uttar Pradesh who won a distance double was adjudged best male athlete of the FedCup.

The men’s 400m hurdles and decathlon saw keen contests.

The Asian Games silver medallist Madhuri A. Singh took advantage of favourite Sunita Rani’s absence to win a middle distance double.

Karnataka’s B. Hemalatha won the women’s 3,000m steeplechase event, which was introduced at the national level for the first time at this meet.

J.J. Shobha of host state Andhra Pradesh had won a double by winning the Heptathlon and the Long Jump with modest performances in the absence of national record holders Soma Biswas and Anju B. George.

Anju, ranked ninth in the IAAF world rankings, continues her training stint with world record holder Mike Powell (not with Larry Myricks as wrongly reported earlier) and is currently competing on the European circuit.

The Indian Army won the men’s team title while the Punjab Police took the women’s team and overall championship titles in the FedCup.
