Ostrava qualifiers on show in Auckland

Jaedena Ward extended her New Zealand W16 pole vault record by 4cm in winning the North Island secondary schools title with a clearance of 3.55m at Mt Smart Stadium, Auckland on the second day of the championships (1). The Kristin School year 11 student won the New Zealand W16 title in Inglewood with a height of 3.51m.

However, Ward remains short of the 3.65m qualification mark for this summer's 5th IAAF World Youth Championships* in Ostrava, Czech Republic (11 - 15 July 2007).
 
The Bays Cougars team of Becki West, Sophie Healey, Bianca Lawrie and Elena Hewett, competing by invitation in the open girls 4 x 400m relay, set a New Zealand W16 record of 3:53.72. This clipped 0.50s off the record set by Auckland at last year's junior nationals in Hamilton.

Yarride Rosario from Campion College Gisborne added the junior boys 200m record to the 100m record won on the first day. Rosario set the record twice, in the heats with 23.42 improving it in the final to 23.09.
 
Other records went to Sarah McSweeney of Waikato Bay of Plenty in the open girls' 2000m steeplechase running 6:59.16, Jason Verburg of Auckland 13.60m in the intermediate boys' Triple Jump, Brad Mathas of Wanganui 4m 10.47s in the junior boys 1500m and Elizabeth Lamb of Auckland 1.75m in the intermediate girls high jump.

Lamb has now qualified twice for selection to the World Youth Championships in the Czech Republic in July. Mathas (13) from Cullinane College set a record in the junior boys' 800m on day one.
 
Kelsi Patterson of Auckland qualified for selection to the World Youth Championships after finishing second to Camille Buscomb of Waikato in the senior girls' 1500m in a time of 4:31.76. Buscomb with a winning time of 4:30.92 has already qualified for the World Youth Championships in the 1500m as well as the 3000m.

Eight records on Day One

Eight records were set at the first day of the North Island secondary schools athletic championships at Mt Smart Stadium Auckland on Saturday (31 March).

Yarride Rosario of East Coast North Island was streets ahead of the rest of the junior boys' 100m field setting a record of 11.18s. The 13-year-old from Campion College in Gisborne also set a personal best time. At the New Zealand championships in Inglewood Rosario was fourth in the M16 100m final.
 
Brad Mathas of Wanganui cut nearly four seconds off the junior boys' 800m record winning in 2:00.91.

Ayla Gill of North Harbour had a great battle with Manawatu's Millie McNie in the open girls' hammer throw. The record see-sawed between these two throughout the competition, Gill finally claiming a fresh record of 43.80m. McNie was second with 42.54m, which also broke the previous record of 40.08m, which she set last year.

Manaaki Walker-Tepania of Wellington was out to 6.28m for a new record in the junior boys' Long Jump. Walker-Tepania will also share the junior boys' High Jump record of 1.84m, after having to settle for second on a count back from winner Jordon Roderique of Wellington.
 
Te Rina Keenan set a record of 46.06m in the senior girls' Discus Throw, Vanessa Hurley was out to 12.99m for a record in the senior girls' Shot Put, while James Doyle was in record breaking form in the intermediate boys Shot Put with 15.81m.
