Christina Obergföll continues to show consistent fine form in the build-up to the 12th IAAF World Championships in Athletics, Berlin, Germany (15– 23 Aug).
The German javelin thrower took her event at a rainy meeting in Biberach on Wednesday evening (24) with 67.93m after a fine duel with Steffi Nerius.
Nerius had opened her competition with 63.07 and then improved to 63.54. With this mark she was still in the lead when it came to the final attempts since Obergföll had three fouls and only managed 61.63 from five throws. But then she improved to 67.93, while Nerius achieved 64.05 in round six.
In the 110m Hurdles Helge Schwarzer won the final with 13.56 secs after beating the qualifying standard for Berlin in the first round (13.53). Jens Werrmann was second iwith 13.62 while Germany’s potential number one Thomas Blaschek once again had bad luck. He came in third with 13.84, picking up a slight muscle injury.
Raphael Holzdeppe took the Pole Vault with 5.60m, while Nils Winter won the Long Jump with 7.75m.
A day earlier on Tuesday (23) the Shot Put was held seperately in Biberach. Here three men achieved marks beyond 20 metres. Olympic champion Tomasz Majewski (Poland) won with 20.70m after a fine series (20.21, 20.70, x, 20.67, x, 20.59). Peter Sack took second with 20.39. He had five efforts between 20.13 and 20.39. Ralf Bartels was third with 20.21 while Poland's Jakub Giza had 19.97 for fourth.
The women’s event was won by Nadine Kleinert with 19.13m. Anca Heltne (Romania) took second with 18.71.
