African 10,000m bronze medallist Ben Maiyo shook-off strong opposition to win the 5000m race a day after finishing second in the 10,000m at the two day Kenyan Police Championships which ended today at the Moi Kasarani stadium.

The two days were somewhat dampened by the absence of  World 10,000m champion, Charles Kamathi, who famously brought to an end Ethiopia's Haile Gebrselassie's reign in Edmonton in 2001.

In Kamathi's absence Benjamin Maiyo, who was third at 10,000m in the 2002 African Championships in Tunisia behind compatriots Paul Kosgei and John Korir, won the Police 5000m title in 13:45.6. Julius Nyamu of Kenya Airport Police Unity was second in 13:50.0, while Okari was third in 13:55.0.

Maiyo had also taken second place to Gilbert Okari in the 10,000m on Wednesday in 29:09.7. The winner clocked 28:52.2.

“I was feeling so heavy during the 10,000m race and that is why I decided to compete in today's 5000m to keep fit,” Maiyo said.

In the women's programme, the championships saw renowned cross country runner Isabella Ochichi (third in 4-km in 2002 in Dublin and fourth this year in Lausanne) run away with a middle distance double at 1500m and 800m).

On Wednesday, Ochichi won the 1500m in 4:22.0 from Esther Maina (4:34.5), and won today's 800m race after clocking 2:09.2 while Jessica Obare was second in 2:12.3, and Joyce Kingoina third in 2:16.7.
