Charles Kamathi wins the 2005 Kenyan Police Championships (© Omulo Okoth)
Olympic 5000m silver medallist Isabella Ochichi displayed her top shape when she pulled off a hat-trick during the Kenya Police Athletics Championships which ended today at Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani (Sat 21 May).
Ochichi won the 800m, 1500m and 5000m races. She clocked 2:07.4 in the 800m, 4:20.21 in the 1500m and 17:23.0 to take the 5000m, in which she won the Olympic silver in Athens last year.
“This is good warm-up for the major championships ahead. I want to fight for a place in the Kenyan team for World Championships in Helsinki where I hope to win a medal,” confirmed Ochichi.
She was control in all the races, dashing to the front after the first lap in the 800m with no response from her opponents. In the 1500m, she pulled away with 100m to go and easily won. In her 5000m specialty, she went ahead after three laps and was neck and neck with Obare until 350m to go, when she sprinted off to win.
Charles Kamathi, who won the 2001 World 10,000m title, ensured his campaign for his own forthcoming international track programme was also on course for success with a 13:56.8 victory in the men’s 5000m.
Kamathi started the race confidently and was in front after the first lap. He was briefly in second and third positions at the midway point with Fredrick Cheruiyot and Geoffrey Siele, both of the crack General Service Unit, exchanging the lead.
However, with four laps to finish, Kamathi, who was representing Eastern Province, shot to the front and was unchallenged to the finish. Cheruiyot and Siele were second and third in 14:00.6 and 14:02.0.
“I am happy with the build-up so far. This race was just to build up speed for the 10,000m. I was training in Japan for a few weeks and ran one race in which I was second in 13:11 (13:11.98 in Hiroshima 29 April). I now plan to train here at home until the National Championships and World Championships Trials before making any further plans,” said Kamathi .
