Burrell
stuns Jones in women's long jump

26 June 1999 – Eugene, Oregon - Dawn Burrell derailed Marion Jones's bid for a
perfect season by overtaking the slightly injured superstar for a stunning victory in the
women's long jump at the U.S. championships on Friday. Burrell, younger sister of former
100 meters world record holder Leroy Burrell, soared 6.96m on her fifth attempt, and
Jones, the world's top-ranked women’s jumper who slightly sprained her right knee two
weeks ago, could not regain the lead.
Jones still made the American world championships team with her second place finish of
6.78m.
Jones, who fouled once and passed twice to protect the knee, said she still hoped to win
four gold medals at August’s world championships in Seville, Spain.
"I'm not going to put anything off on the knee," said Jones, who will compete in
the women's 200 meters here Saturday and Sunday. "I woke up this morning and it felt
good. Obviously I would love to go through the whole season undefeated, but there are no
excuses for today. I need to work on it."
The surprising evening also produced an
emotional triumph by veteran Dennis Mitchell in the men's 100 meters and the return of
former two-time Olympic champion Gail Devers, who finished second in the women's 100
meters behind Inger Miller.
The 33 year-old Mitchell won the men's race in a wind-assisted 9.97. Brian Lewis and Tim
Montgomery both clocked 10.00 seconds to make the American team for Seville.
"In all reality, this could be my
last national championship," Mitchell said. "Things have to be taken day-by day.
I don't know if I will be running in Seville."
Miller ran a wind-assisted 10.96 seconds to win the women's 100m. Devers, the 92 and 96
Olympic champion who was running her first final in more than a year, finished second in
10.97. Angela Williams, 98 world junior silver medallist was third in 11.03.
Olympic champion Charles Austin easily won the men's high jump, clearing 2.28m, and U.S.
record holder Lance Deal dominated the men's hammer with a throw of 80.35m.
Adam Goucher edged veteran Bob Kennedy for the 5,000m title, his time of 13 minutes 25.59
seconds winning by 1.26 seconds. Connie Price-Smith won the shot put with a best of 18.86m
and Stacey Bowers captured the triple jump with a leap of 13.66m.
Chris Huffins scored 8,350 points to win the decathlon and Shelia Burrell won the
heptathlon with 6,101 points as world indoor pentathlon champion DeDee Nathan missed her
stated goal of finishing in the top three and automatically qualifying for the world
championships.
Nathan, who failed to clear a height in the high jump Thursday, scored 5,318 points in the
other six events and placed eighth. She can still make the world championship team if a
third American does not score more than 6,000 points, the world qualifying standard.
