After four decathlon disciplines, Kevin Mayer is already 42 points up on the pace required to break the French record he set when taking the Olympic silver medal in Rio last year.

He sailed over 2.08m in the high jump, his best ever mark within a championships decathlon, to consolidate his lead.

Mayer’s leap was beaten only by Germany’s Kai Kazmirek, who leapt a season’s best of 2.11m, moving him from eighth to equal second overall and improving his chances of a medal. Compatriot Rico Freimuth was just two centimetres shy of his lifetime best, leaping 1.99m, and currently shares second place with Kazmirek. The German duo is already more than 100 points adrift of Mayer, though.

Despite suffering illness in the days leading up to the decathlon, Canada’s Damian Warner was only a centimetre off his season’s best with 2.02m, keeping him in sixth place overall.

Ilya Shkurenev moved up the leader board again, the neutral athlete clearing 2.08m to go into ninth place.

In the Grenadian sibling rivalry, older brother Kurt Felix fared better in the high jump, clearing 2.08m to younger brother Lindon Victor’s 1.99m. It meant Felix moved from ninth to fifth overall, while Victor slipped down two places to 12th.
