European marathon champion Daniele Meucci and high jumpers Marco Fassinotti and Alessia Trost are among the 33 confirmed athletes on Italy’s team for the IAAF World Championships, Beijing 2015.
Having won silver and bronze medals in the 10,000m at previous editions of the European Championships, Meucci finally landed gold last year in the marathon. He will contest the 26.2-mile distance in Beijing where he hopes to win his first global medal.
Fassinotti led an Italian 1-2 in the high jump at the recent IAAF Diamond League meeting in London with national record-holder Gianmarco Tamberi finishing second. Both are on the team for Beijing, as is European under-23 champion Alessia Trost in the women’s event.
Race walkers also feature prominently on the team, led by national record-holder Eleonora Giorgi.
FIDAL hopes to add two more athletes to the team – namely steeplechaser Jamel Chatbi and 1500m runner Margherita Magnani – once the IAAF extends its invitations based on the 2015 world lists to fill any remaining places within each event’s allocation, as per the new entry system.
