Vala Flosadóttir named Iceland’s Athlete of the Year

Sydney Olympic bronze medallist, Vala Flosadóttir, has been named Iceland’s Athlete of the Year 2000 by the country's federation of sports journalists. Pole vaulter Flosadóttir received 440 points of 460 from the pool of 23 members of the country’s sports journalists association. Flosadóttir is only the third woman, and the first woman from track & fields events, to be honoured with this award since the elections were first held in 1956.

In Sydney Flosdóttir became was the first athlete in the Iceland’s sporting history to win a medal at the Olympic games.
The swimmer, Örn Arnarson, was number 2 this year with 337 points and the women’s 400m hurdles runner, Gudrún Arnardóttir, was third, receiving 237 points. Arnardóttir placed 7th in 400 m H in the Olympics in Sydney.
