Réduit, Mauritius - It was a very special moment for Mauritian people, and while it certainly was not the greatest meeting of all time, there was some real magic conjured up at the Skyline International, which took place on Sunday (15 May) at the Maryse Justin Stadium in Réduit.
HPTC students return home
After six months spent away from their island, it was the time for Eric Milazar, Arnaud Casquette and Jonathan Chimier, who live Senegal and train at the IAAF High Performance Training Centre (HPTC) of Dakar, to return to their country and offer a beautiful show to their most fervent fans, the people of Mauritius.
“It really a very special moment for us,” said Eric Milazar, the three times gold medallist at the African Championships and who had an easy win on Sunday at in the 400m in 46.56.
“The Mauritius International Meet is the only event where we are competing in Mauritius and the most important thing was not really the performance, but to the pleasure of running for the Mauritian people,” insisted Eric Milazar.
Arnaud Casquette, who came fourth in the Long Jump event with 7.76m, had similar thoughts - “All through the year, we are competing all around the world, but it is only in Mauritius were we can feel this particular consciousness. Here we are at home, and there’s nothing stronger than competing at home.”
First time for Chimier
It was an especially historic time for the winner of the Long Jump (7.94m) Jonathan Chimier, as this was the first time that he had won at the Mauritius International Meet. Even though, Chimier has an impressive prize list – African Junior Champion in 2001, African Senior Champion in 2004, gold medallist at the Francophone Games, finalist in the World Youth Championships in Bydgoszcz, tenth at the Athens Olympics – he seems much more happy about his win here in the presence of his most ardent fans in Mauritius than any of those past deeds at world level.
“You see that? That’s the first time that I win the Mauritius International Meet”, said Chimier. “I’m so happy to win this meeting for the first time of my career and even happier to win in the presence of Mauritian people.”
But the result in the Mauritius International Meet also left him happy for another reason, as this was his first competition outdoors in 2005. “I had to stay away from the track for a moment, therefore missing the start of the outdoor season. This is my first outdoor competition of the year, and I’m very pleased to start with a victory,” explained Chimier.
Buckland still the fastest
Stéphan Buckland, Athens Olympic 200m finalist was competing in the 100 metres event on Sunday and clocked 10.40 to win despite the presence of the formidable Senegalese Oumar Loum, who finally finished fifth in 10.78.
Although, he left the HPTC of Dakar a couple of years ago, Buckland insists how important this meeting is by the fact that “this is the only competition were he faces international opposition on Mauritian soil, as most of the time we are competing in Europe. Training in Mauritius is one thing, but running against great athletes like Oumar Loum in front of our public it absolutely exciting”.
