Zimbabwean sprinter David Tinago and Zambian distance runner Tonny Wamulwa stole the limelight on the second and final day at the Southern Africa Youth Championships in Tshwane South Africa on Sunday.

Drawn in lane six Tinago ran the race of his life to win the 400m in a career best of 47.86. The pace he set inspired all eight finalists to run inside the qualifying time for the event at the IAAF World Youth Championships. Having only run 49.10 at their national championships last month, this was the second time he covered the one lap race in less than 50 seconds.

"My main challengers where the South Africans who where running in the inside lanes. Since I could not see what was going on I decided not to take any chances and run flat out," said Tinago.

"Frankly, I did not expect to run so fast. I have had limited training because I was preparing for school examinations. With more support from my father who sometimes coaches me, I will do better at the World Youth Championships in (Marrakech) Morocco," says Tinago who attends Allan Wilson High School in the Zimbabwean capital Harare.

Meanwhile, Zambian athletics appears to have a promising future.

First came the surprise victory by Racheal Nachula (24.49) who set a championships record in the girls’ 200m. This was followed by another championships record in the 3000m where Tonny Wamulwa clocked 8:25.99, while Jordan Chipangama (8:28.13) clinched the silver medal.

"Initially I run conservatively over the first 1000m as I was not sure about the strength of the South Africans. They beat us in the 1500m and I was determined that this would not happen again," said Wamulwa.

"With some serious training and support from our federations, I think we will do well in Morocco," says the student from Kaoma High School, Chingola in the Zambian Copper belt.

Mozambican triple jumper Afonso Zondamela (14.67m) not only set a championship record, but also qualified for Morocco. Tereza Master (9:50.00) clinched Malawi's only gold medal when she won the 3000m.

Elsewhere South Africans proved to be in a class of their own in the field events were they set several championship records. Simone du Toit (15.22m) and Jan Hoffmann (20.36m) clinched gold medals in the girls’ and boys’ Shot Put. While Ynthi Coetzee (50.56m) and Noel Meyer (73.18m) won the girls’ and boys’ javelin.

On the track Jan Masenamela (1:49.95) set a championship 800m record. Other winners were Sean Stone (2.06m) in the high jump, Jeanre Roussow (21.70) in 200m, and Louw Smit (13.82) in the 110m Hurdles

The Championships concluded on an exciting note with Namibia (2.12.13) coming from behind to win the girls’ medley relay from South Africa (2:13.03) and Zambia (2:13.82).

South Africa (1:55.30) held of the challenge from Zambia (1:55.71) and Zimbabwe (1:57.06) to carry the day in the boys’ medley relay.
