NSA Volume 15 Issue 1 2000 Editorial
The special topic of the first issue of NSA of the year 2000 is dedicated to coaches. Frank Dick (GBR) stresses the need for coaches and athletes to review their relationship against the background of commercial and professional changes in athletics. What is the reality of coaches' work and the opportunities to become a coach, in different parts of the world? NSA has asked several very experienced coaches from different continents and got an exciting view on the problems of coaching.
In the viewpoint, Helmut Digel (GER) describes his perspectives of sport at beginning of a new century and gives a superb analysis of the role of sport and its position within modern society.
In the studies section, Larisa Shakhlina (UKR) presents an article on the physical capacity of female athletes and its determining factors. Bill and Geoff Tancred (UK) give practical guidelines for athletes when they suffering from Low Back Pain. Michael Ashenden (AUS) gives a short description of the blood test being introduced as a way to detect athletes who abuse "EPO". The bibliography in this issue is an actual update on EPO-related publications and a "must" for all scientists and coaches.
Last year the IAAF introduced the World Youth Championships in Athletics. In our Roundtable several experts to comment on this innovation and give their feedback and recommendations.
NSA is glad to introduce a new section: "What ever happened to…?" which will inform readers about prominent athletes and coaches of the past. What they are doing now, what is their view on actual athletics and what did they gain from athletics? To kick off, we spoke to one of the most innovative coaches in middle and long distances: Arthur Lydiard of New Zealand, who guided Peter Snell (and many others) to superb achievements starting in the 1960s.
Enjoy this issue of NSA and give us a feedback on the statement of our authors. Please also look for our updated section on the IAAF website: www.iaaf.org
