Russian Junior Champs produce some sprinting surprises!

20 Championships were held in Sochi, Russia, from 22 - 24 May, and they threw-up a couple of sprinting shocks.

Vladimir Krasnov is only 17-years-old, and his victory at the 400m was really a surprise for everybody. He not only left behind his opponents who were several years older but also set the new Russian Youth record – 46.96. The former national record had been set five years before his birth.

Another surprise was the success of Tatyana Chernova in the women’s 200m - the World Junior Heptathlon champion clocked 23.50 at the distance that was not her preferable discipline.

Also notable were the hurdling performances of two men. Vladimir Zhukov clocked 13.79 in the 110m event, while Sergei Sakaev finished in 51.80 over the 400m Hurdles.

Two pole vaulters cleared the bar at 5.40m. Yevgeniy Ageev was declared the the winner on count back, with Leonid Kivalov the runner-up.  Stanislav Ionov was the best in Long Jump (7.73m) and Luckmanu Adams won the Triple Jump landing at 16.75m on his final attempt..  

Aleksandr Bolshakov took the Shot Put title with 19.21m, and Nickolai Seduck was the victor in the Discus Throw (61.69m)

The winners of Women’s running events were Aleksandra Zaitzeva (53.07 for the 400m), Aleksandra Uvarova (2:05.67 for 800m) and Anastasyia Ott (56.47 for 400m Hurdles).

Natalya Mamlina and Yuliya Babaeva both cleared 1.79m in the women’s high Jump, while there was a tight three-way struggle in the Long Jump - Yuliya Pidluzhnaya (6.50m), Darya Klishina (6.46) and Marya Shumilova (6.44).

Irina Gomenuk won the women’s Triple Jump title with 13.52m.
