23 June 1998Monaco - The Council of the International Amateur Athletic Federation (IAAF), on the advice of its Technical Committee and following a review of video evidence, has decided not to ratify the 800 metres mark of 1:56.36, set by Maria Mutola (MOZ) in Liévin, France on February 22, as a new indoor world record.

The Council confirmed from TV images that the athlete had contravened rule 141.2 by running outside of her lane (effectively on the in-field) during the final bend.

The Indoor World Record for women’s 800 metres remains 1:56.40, set by Christine Wachtel (GDR) in Vienna on February 13 1988.
