Eike Onnen became the sixth best performer in the German all-time outdoor lists this Sunday. The 24 year-old cleared 2.34m during a meeting in Garbsen (Germany).

Onnen, who had a personal outdoor best of 2.28m from last year, had jumped 2.10, 2.19 and 2.25 on his first attempts.

Kabelo Kgosiemang (Botswana) then cleared 2.28m, with which he was to place second in the end.

Onnen had decided to pass this height and instead went for 2.31m which he cleared on his second attempt. Having won the competition he cleared 2.34m at once and then went for 2.37m.

Missing the 20-year-old German record height of Carlo Thränhardt on his first attempt he decided to try even higher but failed twice at 2.39m.

Indoors Onnen had jumped 2.30m this season in January. His attack on the German record came as a big surprise in Garbsen.

He his tied in sixth place on the German all-time outdoor list together with Paul Frommeyer (1983), Ralf Sonn (1993) and Wolfgang Kreißig (1999).

His jump from Garbsen was the highest by a German athlete indoors and outdoors since Martin Buss who became World champion in 2001 with 2.36m.

Triple jumper Charles Friedek won his event with 16.58m while Christoph Stolz took the long jump with 7.95m and a two centimetre advantage to Nils Winter (7.93).
