37 athletes have been named in the first wave of selections for the Norwich Union Great Britain and Northern Ireland Team for the IAAF World Championships in Paris, France on 23-31 August 2003. This follows the Norwich Union Trials and AAA Championships on 25-27 July.
UK Athletics Performance Director Max JONES said on naming the team:
"It is evident from the first wave of selections that we will be sending a smaller team to the World Championships than would normally be the case. This is partly as a result of the high qualification standards imposed by the IAAF, which mean that it is difficult to send more than one athlete in some events. It also reflects the number of injuries that our athletes are suffering this year, which is unusual in its extent.
"We still have some outstanding medal opportunities. How many and in which events will be clearer following the Norwich Union London Grand Prix on 8 August. The season needs to unfold a little more before we can clearly assess our chances."
Please note:
As reigning World Champion, Jonathan EDWARDS (Gateshead Harriers) is automatically entered for the World Championships as an individual.
As a result of illness and injury, Paula RADCLIFFE (Bedford & County AC) has asked not to be selected for the World Championships until the second wave of selections on 11 August.
Jo PAVEY (Exeter Harriers) has also asked not to be selected at this stage as she is undecided whether to compete over 1500m or 5000m at the World Championships.
Additional selections will named on Tuesday 12 August.
