Fiona May shatters Italian Triple Jump record in first competition
Italy's Fiona May set a new Italian triple jump record indoors in her first ever competition in the event during an indoor meeting in the Palasport complex in Florence on 20 January. The former British long jumper, who acquired Italian nationality after marrying Italian pole vaulter Giovanni Iapichino, occasionally practises the triple jump to break the monotony of long jump training and doesn't intend to compete in the triple jump again during this indoor season.

In Florence, May set the new record of 14.56m with her first jump and then had three no-jumps and two further jumps at 14.45 and 14.06. The previous Italian record of 14.01 was set by Antonella Capriotti at the 1993 World Indoor Championships in Toronto in 1993. Only eight other athletes in the all-time rankings have scored better marks.
