Diagana, Galfione and Arron lead French teams for European Cup

15 June 1999 - Paris - The French Athletic Federation announced yesterday the men’s and women’s’ teams which will take part in the European Cup this weekend in Paris.

Richard Descoux, national team leader named 400m hurdles World Champion Stéphane Diagana and 100m European record holder Christine Arron leaders of the men’s and women’s teams aiming for the number one podium spot in front of their home crowd.

"There is a very strong possibility that the men will finish within the top three but I am positive that both the men and women’s teams have a chance of being on the podium on Sunday" said Descoux. "I think the French teams will be very competitive. The selection has been easy to make this year as the top French athletes have already confirmed their excellent physical condition.

"The only difficult decision came in choosing between two athletes for the men’s long jump. We have chosen Emmanuel Bangué, fourth in Atlanta Olympic Games, who has jumped 8.12m so far this season over Senegalese-born Frenchman Cheik Touré. Although Touré has jumped 8.18m, when the two jumpers met during competition, which has been on two occasions, both times Bangué won the competition."

Despite a good performance in the 200m on Sunday, Christine Arron will run the 100m in Paris for she proved in Villeneuve d’Ascq that she isn’t ready yet for the longer distance. The 200m will be left open for 1998 World Junior Champion Muriel Hurtis who came very close to her personal best on Sunday.

This weekend’s competition will include representatives from Great Britain, Germany, Czech Republic, Italy, Poland, Russia and France, with, in addition a men’s delegation from Greece and a women’s team from Romania.
