A very different type of calendar
Provoking an outraged reaction from conservative track and field fans in the US, a very different type of calendar has been produced for the year 2000. Featuring only young American women athletes, such as sprinter Inger Miller, long jumper Dawn Burrell, hurdler Angie Vaughn, high jumpers Tisha Waller and Amy Acuff, pole vaulter Stacy Dragila and many others, the photographs have taken the rising female stars of US track and field out of their usual context and transformed them into supermodels. But there is a much more serious aim in mind, as is explained on the back cover of the calendar itself:
"Florence Griffith-Joyner, "Flo-Jo", forever changed our perception of womens sports. Her power, style, and grace captivated us, but it was her humble commitment to the youth of America that made her a truly special human being. Half of the proceeds of this calendar will go to her foundation and the other half will go directly to the elite track and field athletes featured to enable them to prepare for their push to the 2000 Olympics in Sydney."
