Triple Jumper Jadel Gregório produced the best performance of the XXVI edition of the “Troféu Brasil/Caixa de Atletismo” which took place in São Paulo from 20 to 24 June, by reaching out to 17.70m (wind 1.1) on Sunday 24 June.
This is the second best performance of the season for the 2.02m giant, after the magnificent 17.90m South American record obtained at the Brazilian GP of Belém - IAAF World Athletics Tour meeting - on 20 May. Gregório was expected to compete in the Long Jump as well, but on his return from England, where he is now based, working with Peter Stanley, he decided to just focus on his main event to win his sixth Troféu title.
The Troféu Brasil/Caixa de Atletismo, which is a national club competition, and serves as the national championships, also established the Brazilian team for the upcoming Pan-American Games (Rio de Janeiro, 22-29 July).
Of his 17.70m series, Gregório had just the one great jump, his last. He opened with a foul; followed with 16.80/0.0, a pass, 17.19/0.0 and 16.15/-0.2, before setting his best mark of the day. Jefferson Dias Sabino was second with 16.79/0.3, and will also represent Brazil in Rio.
Costa takes both Long and Triple
In the absence of Maurren Maggi (already qualified for the Pan Ams), Keila Costa showed consistency and character to take her 2 events, the Long and Triple Jumps.
On Thursday 21 June, Costa claimed the victory in the Triple Jump with 13.91 (-0.3), after a tough battle with Fernanda Procópio Delfino (13.87/-0.5) and Tânia Ferreira da Silva (13.84/-0.3).
On Sunday, in a much easy journey, Costa took the Long Jump with 6.76 (0.3), leaving no doubts whatsoever. Laurice Félix was second with 6.37 (1.0), and Vanessa Vieira Seles was third with 6.33 (-1.7).
The double victory leaves Costa with 8 national titles (4 at each event).
Championship records at Combined Events
The 2007 season has produced good results for Brazil at both Decathlon and Heptathlon, and this was ratified in São Paulo by Carlos Eduardo Chinin and Lucimara da Silva.
After a very good first day (4287 points) based on personal bests in 100m (10.86), Long Jump (7.50), High Jump (2.11) and 400m (48.57), Chinin followed with good hurdling (14.44) but then faced his weaker events, scoring 38.12 in Discus, 4.40 in the Pole Vault (a pb) and 50.27 in Javelin Throw, to close with a 4:37.44 effort in the 1500m. The final score of 7854 points reflects a personal improvement of 257 points for the 22 year-old.
Ivan Scolfaro da Silva was second with 7684 points, and will accompany Chinin in the Pan-American Games. Scolfaro da Silva, a solid discus thrower, according to decathlon standards, had problems at this event, and only reached 35.97m, but also faced a very inspired opponent who was clearly better.
In the Heptathlon, Lucimara Silvestre da Silva had once again – like in the South American Championships – some ups and downs. After scoring 3529 points on the first day (pbs of 13.45 in 100mh and 24.47 in 200m), her best ever, the 21 year-old needed a pb of 2:14.4 to improve the 6017 points record of Conceição Geremias. Despite having a 2:16.41 personal best, she decided to leave the effort for the Pan-Am Games. “My mother had some health issues and I couldn’t train well in the past couple of weeks. My goal is to be over 6000 in Rio,” said Lucimara, who ran 2:23.72, and ended with 5891 points (has a pb of 5897).
Elizete Gomes da Silva, a 36 year-old from Cambé, Paraná, was second with a personal best of 5766 points, after having improved to 5727 at the South American Championships.
Pole vaults bring no surprises
Both South American record holders in the Pole Vault, Fábio Gomes da Silva (5.77) and Fabiana Murer (4.66), won their events with 5.50 and 4.50m marks respectively.
Among other remarkable winners, veteran thrower Elisângela Adriano took the Shot and Discus with 17.16 and 56.97, to now reach 30 victories at the Troféu (16 in Shot and 14 in Discus). Amazonian sprinter Sandro Rodrigues Viana won at 100/200m in 10.28/20.68, distance king Marílson Gomes dos Santos triumphed at 5000 and 10,000m, while Ednalva Laureano da Silva, “Pretinha”, produced the same feat on the female side.
