In 2023, after winning the 200m at the previous two editions of the World Athletics Championships, the US 26-year-old not only retained his half-lap crown at the World Athletics Championships Budapest 23 but also added 100m and 4x100m titles to his haul.

He became the US 200m record-holder in 2022, running 19.31 to win gold at the World Athletics Championships Oregon22 and take 0.01 off the national record set by Michael Johnson at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. With that performance, Lyles became the first back-to-back men’s world 200m champion since Usain Bolt won four titles in a row from 2009 to 2015. It also moved Lyles to third on the world all-time list behind only Bolt with his world record of 19.19 and Yohan Blake with 19.26.

“I was true in form for a world record, but I am OK with the American record,” Lyles said at the time.

In the 100m, Lyles scorched to his 9.83 personal best when winning the first part of his gold medal treble in Budapest.

After being named men’s World Athlete of the Year for track events at the end of 2023, Lyles was asked if winning his three world titles in Budapest had changed him.

“If anything, I’m more hungry than before because I’ve proved to myself that I can do it, so now I’m even more eager to do it for next year,” he said. “It’s almost like another fire has been ignited for next year.”
