Regina Jacobs, Tim Broe and David Krummenacker all went into the record books today at the adidas Boston Indoor Games, in front of 2,800 roaring fans at the Reggie Lewis Track & Athletic Center, to earn a total of $60,000 in bonuses.
“I wish we could take it with us everywhere,” said Jacobs of the crowd, which saw her demolish Lynn Jenning’s 16-year old World Best by 4 ½ seconds with her 9:23.38 victory in the adidas women’s 2-mile. “I come back here, it seems, every year to break a record.” Jacobs finished more than 10 seconds ahead of her closest rival, Ethiopia’s Meseret Defar, and earned a $10,000 bonus.
Jacobs, 38, set an American mark here for 1000 metres in 2000, and last year set the meet record at 3000 metres.
For Broe, who set a new US indoor record for 3000 metres (7:39.23) in finishing second to Leonard Mucheru of Kenya in the Visa men’s 3000 metres, the feeling was newer. “There aren’t many people who can say they’re an American record-holder,” he said.
The 24-year-old Broe, out of the University of Alabama, moved to Ann Arbor just a month ago to train more closely with his coach, Ron Warhust. Already the 2001 US champion at both 3000 indoors and 4K cross-country and the 4th-place steeplechaser at the 2000 Olympic Trials, Broe has had a spectacular early indoor season. Last week, he ran what was the fastest time in the world this year, 7:49.21, at a Michigan meet, before shattering it yesterday in edging under the 21-year-old American record (7:39.94) of the legendary Steve Scott.
In running perhaps the gutsiest race of the day, Broe led Mucheru through most of the first mile before the Kenyan, a sub 3:50-miler, took the lead only to see Broe steal it back with 400 metres left. Mucheru managed a sprint finish to win in 7:37.46.
“He showed he deserved the record,” said the Kenyan indoor specialist.
As if that wasn’t exciting enough, the crowd had even more to scream about as hometown hero Jonathon Riley of Brookline ran a 3-second personal best to finish third (7:46.84) in a strong field.
Wrapping up the record-setters was David Krummenacker, who sprinted past Laban Rotich of Kenya in the final lap of the 1000 metres to win in 2:17.85, breaking Ocky Clark’s 1989 AR of 2:18.19. Rotich was second in 2:19.05. “Today I said I was going to chase after the record or die trying,” said Krummenacker, 26, the reigning 800-metre US outdoor champion who was part of the World Record-setting 4x800-metre relay at this meet two years ago.
Broe and Krummenacker each took home $25,000 bonuses for their record-breaking day, put up by meet organizer Global Athletics & Marketing.
Earlier in the meet, Jolanda Ceplak or Slovenia won the 800m in 1:57.79, the fastest time ever run by a woman on US soil and a personal best by two seconds, while Olympic bronze medalist Bernard Lagat of Kenya dominated the adidas Joe Concannon men’s mile in 3:55.16, an indoor personal best.
The adidas Boston Indoor Games was the first stop on the 2002 USA Track& Field Indoor Golden Spike Tour, whose next stop is Friday night at Madison Square Garden for the Millrose Games.
