Reigning Southern African 400 metres youth champion 21 David Tinago will lead Zimbabwe’s slim team comprising just four athletes who will travel to the World Youth Championships in Marrakech next month.
National Athletics Association of Zimbabwe (NAAZ) President Joseph Mungwari announced the four member squad which also includes Tatenda Goronga, Gabrial Mvumvure and Monica Mhaka.
Mungwari said the quartet was selected on the basis of their performance at the Southern Region Track and Field Youth Championships held in Tshwane, South Africa recently.
“We are sending the very few athletes although we have over 16 athletes who have qualified for the event. We are hoping that sponsors will come in to assist so that we could sent two or more athletes,” said Mungwari.
Rising star Tinago who set a regional 400m record and personal best in Tshwane is certainly the pick of the Zimbabwean team after he clocked 47.86.
Mvumvure is the other male athlete who will compete in Marrakesh after he finished 7th (11.04) in South Africa to qualify. Goronga and Mhaka are set to run in the women’s section. Goronga will race in the 400m and 200m, while Mhaka will fly Zimbabwe’s flag in the 800m category.
