Secunda, South AfricaSherwin Vries and Ockert Cillers signalled their intention to scale new heights this season with impressive victories at the first of the ABSA Series meetings staged at Secunda Sports Stadium on Friday night (6 Feb).

Fired up by winning both the 100m (10.42) and 200m (20.72) in convincing style, Vries was bold about his intentions this season. “I want to break both the 100m (10.06) and (20.11) national records. Unlikely previously when I kept my ambition a secret, this time I am coming out in the open,” said Vries.

Olympic 400m Hurdles bronze medallist Llewellyn Herbert, placed fourth (21.12) behind Vries, Marcus la Grange (20.82) and Norwegian John Ertzgaard (21.00), but confirmed his time augurs well for his season’s plans.

"I hold the world indoor 300m Hurdles best (34.90), and my aim is to improve that time when I go to Tampere, Finland next week. I hope to scale a new peak in my career this year”, said Herbert who already has a 49.57 400m Hurdles clocking to his name this year (11 Jan, Germiston).

Cilliers shows good flat speed

Continuing his excellent form after the national student track and field championships in eThekwini last December, Ockert Cilliers improved his career best in the flat 400 metres which he won in 45.80. This was an improvement from the 46.41 he achieved in eThekwini. The runner up, fellow 400m hurlder Alwyn Myburgh (46.28), and third placed Leigh Julius (46.59), also established a career bests.

“The flat speed I have been able to develop, should enable me to run the 400m Hurdles in a faster time. My plan is to improve my career best (48.61) in the Hurdles during our domestic season,” commented Cillers.

Quinn double

Heide Seyerling-Quinn, 2000 Olympic 400m finalist, began her season by holding off a spirited challenge from the vastly improved Estie Wittstock in the shorter sprints. She clocked 11.53 to Wittstock’s 11.68 in 100m, and 23.13 to 23.44 in the 200m.

“Over the past three years I have not started my season this way. As a result I did not have the speed to improve my career best in 400m (50.05). My strategy is to build up some speed,” Seyerling-Quinn disclosed. Perhaps the South African record holder in the one lap race, realises that she needs to breaks the 50 seconds barrier to leave her mark in the event.

Bownes aims at World Indoors

Earlier on, Shaun Bownes blew away the field in the men’s 110m Hurdles to win in 13.63. Frikkie van Zyl 1(13.96) and Stefan Hanekom (14.53) took the minor positions.

“This is my first competition since my winter training. After the next two competitions in this series, I should be ready for the World Indoor Championships”, confirmed Bownes, the Commonwealth Games champion, who was the 2001 World Indoor bronze medallist over 60m Hurdles.

Other notable performances was in the women’s 100m Hurdles where Estonia’s Mirjam Liimask (13.75) was a comfortable winner. Elizna Naude (58.04) won the Discus. Riaan Botha cleared the bar at 5.30m in Pole Vault. While Khotso Mokeona (7.59) won the Long Jump, Burger Lambrechts (18.88) held sway in the Shot. A strong finish enabled marathon runner Hendrik Ramaala (8:06.03) to prevail over Jac Steenkamp (8:06.51) in the 3000m.
