MonteCarloThere will be ten IAAF Golden League Events contested at each of the six meetings in the 2006 series.

Once again the IAAF Golden League will offer the crème of international one-day track and field action with the series opening in Oslo on 2 June and concluding in Berlin on 3 September 2006. In addition to the ten Golden League events, at least six other ‘promotional’ disciplines will be contested at each meeting.

Justin Gatlin, Jeremy Wariner, Rashid Ramzi, Dwight Phillips, Andrus Värnik, Lauryn Williams, Tonique Williams-Darling, Tirunesh Dibaba, Michelle Perry, and Kajsa Bergqvist, were some of the stars of this summer’s Helsinki World Championships, and they all have their chance to shine in next year’s IAAF Golden League, as it is their specialist gold medal events which have been awarded Golden League status for 2006.

In a decision also designed to ensure parity, the ten IAAF Golden League events are divided equally, five for men and five for women, as follows…

IAAF Golden League Events in 2006:

Men: 100m, 400m, 1500m, Long Jump, Javelin Throw
Women: 100m, 400m, 3000/5000m, 100m Hurdles, High Jump

Significantly, next year is the one outdoor season in four in which neither the World Championships in Athletics or the Olympic Games are contested, and so the IAAF Golden League will have an even greater significance. We can anticipate another intense summer of Golden League competition particularly from the new global generation whose youthful talent has also spectacularly mesmerized us on the highest world stage in Paris, Athens and Helsinki in the course of the last few seasons.

So as we build-up to the new IAAF Golden League season, ‘watch this space’ - - for further news especially about the new format of the Golden League Jackpot which will be announced very soon.
