South
Africa Universities Championships

28 April 2001 World Student Games 100 metres bronze medallist Matthew Quinn signaled his return to form when he won the 200 metres at the ABSA South Africa Universities championships today (Saturday).
The two day championships which was held at the Absa University of Port Elizabeth Stadium, was used to select South Africas team to the World Student Games to be held in Beijing, China in August.
A student at the University of South Africa (UNISA), Quinns outing at the championships held mixed fortunes. He failed to defend his 100 metres title, after being disqualified in the semi final after two false starts. In the 200 metres he won his heats and semi final before winning the event in 20.97 seconds.
Since December, l have had to cope with various injuries and illness. I broke my left toe, then tore an ankle ligament, suffered a hamstring injury to my right tight and finally l had to get over a virus infection. This victory signals the beginning of my season. I now plan to sharpen up my speed and competition fitness during the European summer circuit, said Quinn.
Namibian sprinter Sherwin Vries (University of Port Elizabeth) and Zimbabwean-born Gary Kikaya (Rands Afrikaans University) stole the limelight on the first day of the competition.
Recovering from a poor start, Vries accelerated midway through the 100 metres and went on to win the race in 10.37 seconds. Pre-race favourite Morne Nagel (UNISA) was runner up in 10.40, ahead of his teammate Lee-Roy Newton (10.48).
I had a poor start, but l was confident that l will regain lost grounds once l begin to accelerate. This is my fastest time this year. I want to make a break through in Beijing. After the Sydney Olympics, I have gained the experience of how to handle pressure at major championships, said Vries.
A former Southern Africa school 100 and 200 champion, Vries has a career best of 10.26 and 20.61 in the 100 and 200 metres respectively. He is widely tipped to succeed Frank Fredericks as Namibias top sprinter, when the living legend retires from competition.
New-find Kikaya comfortably won his heat and semi finals before storming to a 46.10 victory in the 400 metre final. Placed fourth at the last World Student Games in Spain, Adriaan Botha (University of Pretoria) was runner up in 46.89. Loid Kgopong (Technikon Witwatersrand) took the bronze medal courtesy of a 47.31 effort.
I ran cautiously in the first half of the race as l knew Botha was just behind me. This is proof that l can now run with the big boys. I hope l am selected for the team to the World Student Games, said Kikaya.
Having lived in the country for the past 11 years, Kikaya, 21, has applied for South African citizenship. Although not selected on the provisional squad (see list below), he still hopes his application will be processed in time for Beijing.
This was the most successful championship since the inception of the annual event in 1993. Eighteen championships records where set: eleven by the women; and seven by the men. Records begun tumbling right from the first event (half marathon) of the two day competition.
Place third in the Belgrade marathon a week ago, Silvestor Moloeko (Wits University) won the mens race in a championships record of 1:06.28. Willemein Changuion (Rands Afrikaan University) improved the womens record by two seconds to 1:18:41.
Other women record where set by Olympic finalists Heide Seyerling (200m), Kerry van Zyl (400m hurdles), Marlien Breytenbach (800m) Rene Kalmer (1500m), Elizna Naude (discus), Veronica Abrahamse (shot putt), Marna Dipenaar (javelin), Marida Pretorius (100m hurdles), Minette Bell (3000m steeplechase), and University of Pretoria (4x400m relay).
Jac Steenkamp set the championships record in both the 5000m and 10000m. Ian Collin (20km race walk), Chris Harmse (Hammer) and Martin McClintock (long jump) also set championships record.
