Report by Alfons Juck

Highlights of the Slovak Athletics Championships over the weekend in Banská Bystrica were the women´s hammer record 61.62 by Martina Danišová, the 400 m of Štefan Balošák 45.72, which means that he will go to Olympic Games and first Slovak sub-40 seconds relay time at 4x100 m with 39.81.

Nearly everybody from the Slovak elite competed at the Championships as the event was also a dress rehearsal before next weekend’s European Cup 2nd League (July 8-9).

In very good weather in the sprints Martin Briòarský won every race. At 100 m 10.50 in heats and finals, at 200 m 20.84 and he was also the anchor of the national 4x100 m team squad with hurdles record holder and 1997 World Championships bronze medallist Igor Kováè as the first runner. Kováè also showed better form winning the 110m hurdles in 13,71.

At 400 m two Slovak runners had ambitions to achieve the Olympic Games standard of 45.80. The Atlanta Olympian and national record holder Štefan Balošák and new hope Marcel Lopuchovský had already several times tried to achieve this time at earlier meetings.

During the weekend they decided to try twice.

On Saturday in heats Balošák ran 45.92 and Lopuchovský 46.28, of course in the same race. On Sunday midday it finally came. Balošák achieved his best time since March 1998 with 45.72 and will go to Sydney. Lopuchovsky was not bad with 46.09. He will get another chance at the European Cup over the weekend as Balošák gave up his place on the team for him.

Very interesting duel in the shot between 1998 World Junior Champion Mikuláš Konopka and Slovak lists leader Milan Haborák (in April 20.12). They are now in one family, as Haborak married the sister of Konopka, Michaela.

Despite being tired from the early morning flight from Rome (8th place at Golden League Meeting) Konopka was able to win with a respectable 19.84. High quality also the new hammer record of Martina Danišová 61.62, as she is born 1983 and thus till 2002 a junior. Slovak athletics sees in her the biggest medal hope for the World Junior Championships in October in Chile.

So far 13 places in the Olympic team are secured with the qualification period finishing for Slovak Athletes on July 30.
