26 January 2000 - Halle, Germany - Canada's Olympic 100m champion Donovan Bailey came fourth in the 60m at an indoor meeting here on Wednesday on his return to the track after a long absence through injury.
Bailey, who set out on a path that he hopes will lead to a second gold medal in Sydney, finished fourth in 6.65sec.
Hungary's Roland Nemeth came first with 6.60sec, 100m world championship bronze medallist Tony Dees of the USA was second with 6.63 and Hungary's Gabor Dobos took third spot after clocking 6.64.
Bailey is also set compete at another indoor meeting on January 29 at Karlsruhe in Germany.
Bailey had been off the track for nine months after rupturing his Achilles tendon playing baseball with friends in September 1998, and only returned in June last year with a poor time at Nuremburg.
The former world record holder underwent surgery to repair tendon damage which kept him out of the 100m at the world championships in Seville last August. He did compete in the 4x100m relay but Canada were disqualified in their first outing.
Bailey failed to win a race in 1999 and his best time over 100m was 10.19 at the Canadian championships.
He has been training at his base in Austin, Texas as he attempts to regain peak fitness for the 2000 Olympics and a tilt at wresting back the world record currently held by American Maurice Greene on 9.79.
