MonacoDavid Oliver vs. Dayron Roblesone of the season’s most anticipated match-ups – is coming to the Herculis – Samsung Diamond League meeting in Monaco’s Stade Louis II on 22 July.
Oliver, 28, has been on a tear this season, most recently with a sizzling 12.90 Area record at the Prefontaine Classic Samsung Diamond League fixture on 3 July. Robles, the reigning Olympic champion and World record holder at 12.87, illustrated with his dominating 13.01 victory in Lausanne last week that he has put his few minor early season setbacks well behind him.
The pair will meet for the second time this season in Paris on 16 July, a face-off which will guarantee one certainty: one of the two will be out for revenge in Monaco. The meeting record of 13.06 set by Robles last year will certainly be under threat.
Fast times are a virtual guarantee in the men’s 400m Hurdles as well, with world leader Bershawn Jackson leading the field. The 2005 World champion has clocked 47.32 this season, his fastest time since taking the World title in Helsinki. Most recently the 27-year-old American took his second Samsung Diamond League victory with a 47.62 run in Lausanne. His most immediate target? Kevin Young’s 47.60 meeting record set in 1992.
In the women’s 100m, the year’s hottest sprinter, Carmelita Jeter, has joined the field. The second fastest woman in history at 10.64, the American has won three of her four Samsung Diamond League 100m appearances this year, most recently in Lausanne and Gateshead.
On the infield, Olympic champion Irving Saladino from Panama has joined the field in the men’s Long Jump, where he’ll face reigning World champion Dwight Phillips. Phillips is currently the world leader at 8.42m, while Saladino recently sailed a wind-aided 8.46m to win in Eugene. In terms of victories the pair have split their two meetings this season.
