Nebiolo shares the disappointment of millions of fans over Marion Jones´s injury
25 August 1999 - Seville, Spain - The President of the IAAF, Dr Primo Nebiolo, declared after seeing the incident which sidelined Marion Jones during the semi-finals of the women´s 200m: "I was deeply affected by the injury sustained by Marion Jones, and I am sure that millions of fans around the world share this sentiment. Marion Jones has become a symbol of all that is best in athletics: enthusiasm and the simple joy of competition. Her generosity of spirit is an example for all our young sports enthusiasts. I am sure that Marion will face this difficult moment with great courage and I sincerely hope to see her defend her position among the leading contenders in the forthcoming meetings of the IAAF Golden League.
"This 7th IAAF World Championships, even though they have lost through injury an outstanding athlete like Marion Jones, are as exciting as ever: There is no event in which the ultimate outcome can be predicted. There are other great athletes in contention in the 200 metres; in both the women´s and men´s races and I am sure that tomorrow´s finals will be spectacular and offer us some wonderful performances."
