Ndiss Kaba Badji of the host nation took the men’s Long Jump and Triple Jump double at the West African Championships (29 – 30 April), with a national record of 17.15m in the latter.

The 21 year-old who attends the High Performance Training Centre (HPTC) situated in the capital, had taken second place in the recent Islamic Solidarity Games with 16.34m, which was his previous best Triple Jump performance, and so this weekend’s leap was a massive improvement. The previous national record had been set back in 1972 by Mansour Dia (16.77m) in Munich.

Badji also won the Long Jump with a leap of 7.91. He has a best at that event of 8.20m (altitude), and was second at the 2004 African Championships (7.86).

In this eight nation meeting - Benin, Burkina Faso, Ivory Coast, The Gambia, Guinea-Bissau, Mali, Niger and Senegal – there were also some guests competing the most notable of which was Eric Milazar, the triple African 400m champion, who won the one lap with ease in Dakar in 46.32. Milazar, 29, also trains at the Dakar HPTC.

In the women’s events there was a notable sprint double for Mali’s Kadiatou Camara whose 11.48 for the 100m was a new national record. The 23 year-old's previous best (also the national record) was 11.54 from 2003.

Camara's winning time in the 200m was 23.40, someway short of her national record of 22.94 (2004).
