Canada’s Michael Mason clinched gold in the men’s High Jump competition with a new Personal Best of 2.21 metres as none of the five athletes remaining in contention at the final height of 2.24 were able to clear the bar.

Mason won finally as he was the only one of the remaining pool to have cleared  2.21 at his first attempt.

The young Canadian had not had an easy time of it in the earlier stages of the competition, with two failures at 2.10 and at 2.14, but then he seemed to find his tempo and had a single failure at 2.18 before a good clearance and then followed this with a clean jump at 2.21.

He becomes the second Canadian to win the World Junior Championships High Jump competition, following in the footsteps of Mark Boswell who took the highest place on the podium in Sydney in 1996.

On countback, the silver medal went to Marius Hanniske of Germany and Bronze to China’s Tong Hu. This was the first medal for the unified Germany in this event at the World Juniors.
