Todd Jouda Matthews of the Sudan, Bahraini Youssef Saad Kamel, Saudi Hamdan Al Bishi, and Baya Rahouli of Algeria highlighted the fourth and final day of the track and field competition in the ‘July 5 Stadium’ at the 10th Pan-Arab Games yesterday (7 Oct) - with just the Half Marathon left to be contested on the streets of Algiers, Algeria (8 Oct).
African record
The most outstanding performances came in the two sprint hurdles races.
There was a fourth Games gold for Algeria’s Baya Rahouli who took the women's 100m Hurdles gold in 13.49, to go with the 100m flat, Triple Jump and Long Jump titles already won.
The men’s 110m Hurdles was won by Todd Jouda Matthews, Sudan’s African champion in 13.21, a time which subject to ratification is a massive new Area record (previous Shaun Bownes RSA 13.26 in 2001) for the 25 year-old. Matthews' previous Sudanese national mark was the 13.47 which he established at the Athens Olympics but he had a previous personal best of 13.36 from 2002 when he was still eligible for the USA.
Kamel continues to enhance world class profile
21-year-old Youssef Saad Kamel, the former Kenyan Gregory Konchellah, who is the son of two-time World champion Billy Konchellah, won the men’s 800m in 1:46.12. Kamel, who first came to worldwide attention when taking a surprise 1:43.11 Area record victory in the 'B' race in Zurich, is now an established face on the circuit having won the 800m at the World Athletics Final just under three weeks ago.
There was a second Games gold for 400m winner Hamdan Al-Bishi of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, who took the 200m in 20.80, which is a new personal best for the 23 year-old one lap specialist who took that event on Tuesday in 45.04.
