Lornah Kiplagat paced Edith Masai to a Dutch all-comers record in a special 10,000m race held in Utrecht, The Netherlands last night (17 June).
The "temperature was 20 degrees C, no wind and a little humid, but another great night in Utrecht," Kiplagat's husband Pieter Langerhorst reported to RRW in an e-mail message. "Lornah paced till 5400 metres" and split the 5-K in 15:40, Langerhorst continued.
Masai, 38 of Kenya, was making her debut at the distance. She averaged 74-second laps to finish in 30:51.99. The previous best 10,000m on Dutch soil was achieved by Liz McColgan of Scotland at Hengelo on 25-Jun-1991 (30:57.07). Masai's time was also the second-fastest in the world this year.
Eleven of the top-13 women set career best times. Kenyan Irene Kwambai finished second in 30:55.67 PB, with Bizunesh Bekele of Ethiopia in third in 31:10.68 PB.
Here once more the facts:
- Best time ever for a women's 10,000 in The Netherlands
- Currently 2nd in World in 2005
- 11 of the 13 finishing women set a new PB
