USA’s two-time Olympic 400m hurdles champion Edwin Moses received the Laureus Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2018 Laureus Awards Ceremony in Monaco on Tuesday (27).

As well as winning two Olympic gold medals, Moses remained unbeaten for nine years, nine months and nine days in his specialist event. He also won two world titles and set four world records. He is now a world leader in the fight against the use of illegal drugs in sport.

“My involvement with the World Sports Academy began at the first meeting with Nelson Mandela,” said Moses, who is the Chairman of the Laureus World Sports Academy. “All we knew back then was that we were going to use sport as a tool for social change and we had no structure, no leader or anything. To see where the academy is today and where the foundation is today is very satisfying.”

Tennis players Roger Federer and Serena Williams respectively won the sportsman and sportswoman of the year awards.

Swiss wheelchair racer Marcel Hug won the World Sportsperson of the Year with a Disability Award after winning the T54 800m, 1500m and 5000m at the 2017 World Para Athletics Championships in London.
