Juan Luis Barrios takes double win at 2006 Mazatlan Marathon weekend

time Central American and Caribbean Games champion Juan Luis Barrios emerged as a double winner last weekend (2 / 3 Dec) at the 8th Mazatlán International Marathon, Mazatlán, Mexico, where 5km, 10km and 21.0975km races were also staged for a combined total of over 5000 runners.

Barrios, 23, won the 5km national title on Saturday (2) over defending champion and 2003 World Championships finalist Alejandro Suarez, before making his serious debut over the half marathon on Sunday (3) with the fastest time of the year by a Central American and Caribbean athlete (1:03:13), just one second faster than runner-up Oscar Mateo Cerón (1:03:14).

The 2005 NACAC cross country champion improved his 3.000m and 5.000m personal bests to 7:37.64 and 13:27.89, respectively, closing within less than two second of the Mexican record in the former distance.

Mexico-based Genoveva Jelagat smashed the 5km course record with a 15:39 run, while her countryman George Okworo and Peter Omae did 1-2 in the marathon.
