Hasay takes fifth title at USA Junior Champs

The 2008 World Junior bronze medallist Jordan Hasay won her fifth national title on Saturday (26) at the 2010 USA Junior Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Drake Stadium in Des Moines, Iowa.
 
The USA Junior Championships will serve as the selection meet for the 2010 IAAF World Junior Championships, July 19-25, in Moncton, Canada. The top two finishers in each event will compete in Moncton, provided that they have met the qualifying standard.
 
Hasay waits for last lap burn
 
Oregon's Jordan Hasay ran a tactical race in the women's 1500m, sitting in first or second through much of the race. When the final bell rang, Hasay turned on the afterburners closing the final 400m in 61 seconds to win in 4.26.38. Georgetown's Rachel Schneider finished second in 4:27.26.
 
Flying 400s
 
Motor City TC's Kendall Baisden tore up the track in the women's 400m, racing to victory in 52.59. Arkansas' Regina George took second in 52.80 and Texas's Stacey-Ann Smith was third in 53.17.
 
Houston's Errol Nolan, the fastest qualifier out of yesterday's prelims, handily won the men's 400m in 45.68 while 2009 World Youth silver medallist Josh Mance finished as the runner-up in 46.20. George Mason's David Verbrug took third in 46.38.
 
Cuffe takes 5000m title
 
Heading into the final lap of the women's 5000m, Aisling Cuffe had lapped the entire field save for one. It was a courageous race for Cuffe on day when the track temperature reached upwards of 100 degrees. You could see the heat taking its toll on the final lap, but Cuffe was able to hold her lead and cross the finish line in 16:52.25. Georgetown's Emily Jones was second in 17:27.91.
 
400m Hurdles
 
Penn State's Evonne Britton decided that one podium finish wasn't enough. The runner-up in yesterday's 100m Hurdles, Britton came back out today and claimed the top spot on the podium, winning the women's 400m Hurdles in 57.99. Baylor's Christina Holland was the runner-up in 58.56 and Arizona State's Shakeia Pinnick was third in 58.75.
 
Sheroid Evans of the Wings TC ran away from the field in the men's 400m Hurdles to finish first in 50.55. North Texas's Steven White took runner-up honours in 51.19, while Coppin State's Jibri Victorian was third in 51.30.
 
Men's 1500m
 
Princeton's Peter Callahan claimed victory in the men's 1500m, finishing over a second ahead of his nearest competitor in 3:46.42. Quiet Fire TC's Elias Gedyon was the runner-up in 3:47.65.
 
Barron wins as Sorenson's finish 1-2
 
American Junior record holder Trevor Barron controlled the men's 10km Race Walk the entire way. With over a 300m lead at the end, Barron won in 42:58.62. Tyler Sorensen finished second in 43:53.39.
 
Fourteen-year-old Nicolette Sorenson, Tyler's sister, dominated the women's 10km Race Walk, crossing the finish line in 56:25.49, while Abbey Dunn was the runner-up in 56:58.16.
