IAAF Golden League adopts the Euro
President Lamine Diack to hold Press Conference in Turin on 9 June

26 May 2000 - Monaco – The Working Group of the IAAF Golden League met yesterday at the IAAF headquarters here to refine the last details for the launch of this prestigious circuit that will start with the Meeting Gaz de France Paris Saint-Denis on 23 June.

The meeting, chaired by the IAAF President Lamine Diack, was attended by the General Secretary and other officials of the IAAF, the meet directors of the seven meetings (Paris, Rome, Oslo, Zurich, Monte Carlo, Brussels and Berlin) and representatives of the ISL marketing group.

It was noted with satisfaction that the world’s leading athletes will contest this third edition of the IAAF Golden League. They will compete in the following disciplines:

Men: 100m, 1500m, 3000/5000m, 400m hurdles, high jump, pole vault, shot put;
Women: 100m, 1500m, 100m hurdles, long jump, javelin.

An athlete winning their chosen discipline in five Golden League meetings will win the IAAF Golden League Jackpot of 50kg of gold. Should more than one athlete qualify for the Jackpot, this will be divided equally between them.

The Working Group also decided unanimously that all of the prizes for athletes in the IAAF Golden League will in the future be denominated and paid in Euros. For this year, they will be calculated at the dollar/euro exchange rate as at 1 January 2000 of €1=$1. This means that for the IAAF Golden League disciplines, the first place will receive €15,000; 2nd place €10,000; 3rd €6,000; 4th €4,000; 5th €3,000; 6th €2,000; 7th €1,500 and 8th €1,000.

A bonus of 50,000 Euros will be paid to any athlete setting a new world record in any of the Golden League disciplines at one of the IAAF Golden League meetings. For the women’s javelin, where the record with the new implement was established from 1 january 2000 – Mirela Manjani-Tzelli (GRE), with 67.09m – the same rule will apply as in the IAAF World Championships. In other words, the record bonus will be reduced by 50% in the first year and by 25% in the second year following the adoption of the new standard.

The Working Group also examined a promotional plan for the IAAF Golden League, which will be launched on 9 June in Turin at the press conference of the IAAF President Lamine Diack.
